Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
This was our first year running this derby and we had a great time. First off the shotgun start was way cool and a real kick in the pants. We where in the 2nd wave and Degner got a good hole shot and managed to stay pretty much out in front and in clean water. Had a boat right next to us lose his anchor, rope, buoy and what looked to be a box full of stuff off the front of his boat at full speed. Went flying by us at 45 mph lucky for us he was far enough away that we missed it. Got to our spot and on the first cast landed a nice fat 44 incher and figured we would be tagged out and on the way back to the dock early but that was not to be. Stayed in the shakers most of the day but it was a tough day of fishing did manage to boat another keeper around 47 inches around noon but that was it for the keepers for us. Learned a lot and had a great time all ready planning for next year

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
It was a TEAM effort. Everyone had a hand in landing this hog, I was just blessed enough to be able to tag the fish. I was indeed the biggest fish I have ever faught .
Tom missed 3rd place by only 1/2 pound and the team placed 4th overall, missing first by just a few pounds and only on two fish.
Special Thanks go out to Tom for allowing me to be part of his team. As usual, it was an adventure. Bugflicker, it was indeed a pleasure. Let me know if you ever have an open seat in that new boat.

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
Team HogHunter got the Ofer...
Man, tough day for catching for us...Only scratched out 1 (40 incher) Lost one that was a keeper and maybe a dozen shakers...
Had a flat tire on my trailer at the boat ramp to boot because of a nail near the sidewall...
Had a great time nonetheless with my team and now it is time to move on to Springers...
I did want to say that it was a great charity this year that we were fishing for (Boys & Girls Club of America) and Stan Brock was a great MC...
Maybe next year will provide better results

KHH, why didn't you nominate yourself for the Uh-Oh prize?
Speaking of Uh-Oh, did anyone else see that guy off point of KP in the very mini (maybe 8-10ft) Sears jon boat when all the ships and barges were crossing each other. (Brown pants or Darwin award, not sure which fits best )

SafetyChain, that boat was barely as wide as the guy siting in it. We were in the Tiger above it. I think he used a 32 oz weight for his anchor.

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
Congrats to Saftychain and team mates. A few years ago I ended up in 4th place by less than 0.5 lb.
We only managed two fish, 44 and 49 but did have a great time. Lots of good people and great fun.

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
OK, I strolled out to the street this morning to get the pile of ads out of the litle yellow box next to the mail box. I was looking forward to reading about yesterday's derby. Anxiously, I bypassed the ads, which I almost never do, in search of the Sports section. Snatched it out of the middle of the paper. Low and behold - nothing, nada, zilch! Not even a whisper about the derby! What gives, here? You can bet that if teh Snail Blazers had a good game that ended at 10:00 last night, it would hve made it in the paper.
To the Oregonian people - whussup with this???

I was fishing just south of Kelly point, not part of the derby so already there and fishing when the derby started. What a sight when all these boats came around the point at full speed and what a ride as they passed

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
Team 130 Finished with 1 47" keeper. we caught many in the 36"-41.5" range. we had pretty seady action and a great day. can't wait till next year. We fished just down from the multnomah channel and 60' of water.

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
Team 55 had a great day of catching, all day long, didn't move once, 5 mins after we set up inside the mouth of the mult. channel we started catching shakers. Went through 5+ dz. smelt, (and a lot of multi shaker partial smelts too), but alas not a fish over 39 inches. Saw a couple of keepers caught around us, so figured we'd see one or more ourselves, but it wasn't to be. Still had a blast, and will be back for more next year!!!

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
We hooked up with a 44 and a 47 incher. Had a great day on the water. Best part of the day was the blast off. The adrenaline is still pumping. It was worth $75 just to do that.

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
Well Team 99 got on the board, but that's about all we can say!
We fished one spot all day, just below St. John's bridge. Had a keeper in the boat by 9 am and were thinking it was a great day. Well it was a great day, just no more keepers. Our fish was 46" but very skinny, it only weighed 14lbs!
Lots of shakers and good company. The banquet was much better this year as well.
Thanks Stan Brock, and GI Joes for another fun Derby.
Did anyone see the boat at Portco that had the propane tank catch on fire?? That was us! We were waiting for the blast off and had the heater fired up. Unfortunately we didn't know it had a leak until it was too late. Nice big fireball! Luckily we were able to turn the valve off, and no damage to the boat, was however quite the wakeup call that early in the morning!
So my advice to everyone is check the fittings before lighting the heater.
Good luck and be safe.
Scott

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
Hey Fishingfirst,
Yea we say the fire. I was right next to you on the other side of the dock when your fireball went up. I had fire extengwisher in hand about to jump to your boat when you got it under control. Wow what a show... Glad all was OK...
We couldn't muster anything bigger than a 37 incher, but had a great time.
See ya on the water.

Re: G.I. Joe's Sturgeon Derby Results?
Wishing to Fish,
Nice talking to you guys at the dock, yes, that was not the best first thing in the morning! I was about two seconds away from pitching the whole thing over the side. I was more in shock than anything, I couldn't believe my eyes, and that is not something you want to see, fire and boats do not mix.
So where did you guys end up fishing?
Sure wish I was out there today.
Scott
