Hey what do you pro's use to cure prawns? I'm tired of paying too much for prawns, so I went and bought a bunch of fresh ones. Can I use egg cure?

Re: Curing Prawns
What is it in a prawn cure that dries your skin? Sulfites? Who can tell me? What do you use if you wanted to cure your own prawns? River Rat said Amerman's, but Amerman"s WHAT? Egg cure????Any recipe's from scratch? (sulfite,salt,dye....)??

Re: Curing Prawns
I use left over egg cure juice. It works great. I have also used egg cure and it works. The brighter red/pink the better. Amermans cure is my favorite.

Re: Curing Prawns
I use Ameramans salmon cure for eggs.
I put the prawns or shrimp in a plastic zip lock bag, and let them sit for any where 12 to 24 hours and than vacpack them, when I leave to go fish I leave them out so they defrost.

Re: Curing Prawns
I use nothing but sea salt. It is easy, works great, and it catches a lot of fish. Layer them in a baggie with layers of sea salt in between and thats it. Have boated 60 steelhead this year using them.

Re: Curing Prawns
Buy white prawns and soak 2 dozen in pro choice shrimp oil in tupperware in fridge for a week. Guarantee hookups with rogue river spinner

Re: Curing Prawns
I am with k9jeff and river rat
I use 3 to 4 tbl spoons of amermans red salmon cure and then lay the shrimp in the container and add just enough water to cover the shrimp. slosh it around a little to get it stirred up, stuff them in the fridge and then just take them out as I am going to use them.

Re: Curing Prawns
when you guys are curing your own whether it be amermans, procure, sea salt etc... what type of shelf life are you getting out of them...
The ones you get pre-cured at the bait shops are either going bad or go bad a week after you buy them.
I'll be all over curing them myself if they last longer.
thanks for your responses.

Re: Curing Prawns
if you package them and freeze them they will last a real long time they are like most bait and alergic to being thawed and refroze to many times I package them by the dozen when I freeze them then I just take out a doz at a time.

Re: Curing Prawns
I don't know what you guys are talking about, but tonight I "cured" my prawns with lime, cilantro, evoo, (extra virgin olive oil) and cayenne.
Skewer um up, and cook them on the Foreman grill.
The more cayenne, the better the chance of burning out this virus of mine.
So, guys... That's how you cure a prawn. Plus, you cure the common cold at the same time.
What you are doing, I just don't know!

Re: Curing Prawns
Ok, what type of shrimp and size are you all buying. I'm game for curing my own as it will save some money and give me a little more variety.
