With or without Downriggers...something new
Check these out...

The Long Liner is a great option for those without DRs. This would work great for an additional rod(s) not on a DR. I would run this on a third rod in the middle and the DRs on the side.
Allows you to run out X amount of line and then send it down to a desired depth. When the fish strikes it releases and slides down the line.
Check out the video and written instruction pages. These will work for Kokes, trout, salmon, and steelhead when trolling.

Re: With or without Downriggers...something new
Pretty cool, so I am assuming you got to look at them during the show? If so how fine was the tuning for the line release? For kokes I would assume there would be a fine line between having it release on just a hard strike and a hook up. But in situations where you want to run crazy long leaders, I can see the advantages.
I guess an important point would be the swivel a couple of feet from the lour, as described in the pictorial instructions. I would fear loosing a lot of fish if the “Long Liner” was allowed to ride down to the lour and on the fishes head. Not to mention a twisted mess.
I think for me I would just wonder if it was set properly or released prematurely. On the other hand it would be great for kids who love to real in their fish at the side of the boat, no need to step back.

Just picked up a couple at the show and haven't had them in use yet. My first tests will be for springers.
Your thoughts are correct about a swivel placement.
Appears to have a wide fine adjustment on the line tension....but trial and error will be your guide.

You can do the same thing with the fin at the front of ford fenders and other brands...you can actuall buy the fin separately and make your own setup as soon in previous posts.

Re: With or without Downriggers...something new
That is a great idea! May not et as deep as a downrigger with a 20# ball but how deep do you really have to go unless your fishing for Lake Trout?
I'm not crazy about my home made down rigger's and can't afford a comercial one but I could come up with twelve bucks plus shipping!
I'm not excited about koke fishing. Got a lot of stuff but not one peice of it has ever worked for me. A new toy might encourage me to give it another try!

Re: With or without Downriggers...something new
I have been using this method for years...I run two downriggers each side with two long lines out the back with this setup...or similar...clipping a weight to the fin that is at the front of the ford fender...I bought some of the fins separately and have ran them with a dodger, with only the lure and have had success...I catch equal amounts on the long line and down riggers.

Re: With or without Downriggers...something new
I would guess the advantage of this system over hooking a weight to the front of a ford fender is that a headshake from a fish does not pull against the sinker theoretically reducing the loss of fish from hooks pulling out of the mouth. I would wonder about the return shake slamming the swivel into the back of the apparatus potentially creating slack in your leader. Certainly an interesting idea.

Looks pretty cool. Not sure a little piece of plastic costs $5.00 to ship though

Jz,
Thanks for the note about my LongLiner. Just had an order placed by someone who read your comments on ifish. My fishing pal Steve Hougak called earlier in the week and had caught two springers with LL. He really liked the short leader after the fish was hooked--easy to net! Both fish ate herring.
The best of fishing to you,
