Default buying smelt in bulk

I want to buy my smelt for the year at one time, in bulk. I am looking for about 50 lbs.

Yesterday I got a price quote from the Scapoose Kayak shop for $3.00 per lb. I know that if I buy it prepackaged from GI Joes, I will pay $8.99 right now for about 6 or 7 Cowlitz river smelt. By that basis it seems like a good deal.

Does anyone know approximately how many smelties come per pound?

Also, does anyone know of a better source for bulk smelt? I was thinking that it should be around $1.50-$1.75 per pound. Especially right now.

Thanks for your help.

I saw smelt at Troutdale Thriftway, 2.19 lb. Getting cheaper. It will depend on supply. Try Pacific Seafood in Clackamas.

It depends on size but a fair average may be a dozen per pound. You can call Marv's chevron in Cathlamet,he is a bait dealer and normally has them for sale. His price may be high but its worth a try.360-795-3453

Try Tony's fish market in Oregon City.
I got 10# for a $1.29 a pound on Sat.
If you catch them at the right time
you can get 50# or 100# easy.
There shipments come and go fast.

Since I am not sure when I will be able to get to the river with decent conditions, I scored a limit and a half of smelt at Uwajimaya today. 2 bucks a pound.
