Sandy
Last nights rain didnt seem too bad...and I hear its supposed to taper off today.
Here is my situation...I can either fly fish the Crooked River (Prineville) tomorrow and cath a billion rainbows and white fish with a friend of mine. OR, I can go it alone to the Sandy River by the hatchery and try again for steelhead. I dont want to go to the Sandy if the conditions will suck though...its hard enough when you vaguely know what you're doing.
Thoughts?????

Re: Sandy
Sorry Cool Texan,
Keep your cool and go somewhere else. Even the Sandy will be out. http://oregon.usgs.gov/rt-cgi/gen_st...ation=14142500 Look at this site. When the graph is that steep it's out. Not just rainfall but snowmelt too. Be readt though. When you get 8 10 hours of hard drop the river will be fishable. I landed two nice native bucks in an hour of fishing as the river rose just befor dark last night. The natives are arriving and there are still plenty of nice fresh brats in the river.

Are there any options for steelhead on Saturday that are not 3 hours away?? I have my kitchen pass and new gear that is itching to be used, but also have a wife who is wanting to go out Saturday night.
Where is Bull Run? Would there be any differece near the hatchery??

Re: Sandy
I think you're out of luck for this weekend, get a rain check for your kitchen pass.

Re: Sandy
I know it's tough. Yesterday evening landing/releasing two natives in an hour and seeing several fish roll before it got to late to fish had me checking the river levels and not sleeping much last night. Having Friday/ Saturday off hurts this week.
You could always come out and plunk upper end of Hosner drift or Boat Ramp at Oxbow. There were a few people out today when I checked. The river wasn't completely off color but was rising and had a lot of debris floating. If the freezing level comes down the river could come into shape quickly. There will always be a few people fishing.Yikes... 12.21 feet at 10:00 and still on a steep climb.

Re: Sandy
Big(didn't want to abbreviate to BS),
My days off are Fridays and Saturdays. I will usually be fishing the banks of the Sandy at Oxbow if there is any chance of steelhead around. I'd be more than happy to share information and help out. I do have an advantage being so close to the river. When you work, live and play beside a certain stretch of river for years you have an opportunity to gather lots of information. Sometimes things work out so fish are caught but there are lots of dues to pay. Dues in the form of long, cold and fishless days. I have many of those, even yet. Let me know when you can make it out and I'll make it a point to meet up with you at least for a short while. My work schedule is flexible since I am a salaried employee. Let me know.

Re: Sandy
The Sandy just started to drop within the last hour according to the gauge below Bull Run. (So did the Clackamas, so did the Wilson). Hmm. Hard drop. Freezing level coming down.
For Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday, the Sandy might be the sleeper place to be.
Me. I am planting trees tomorrow and its time well spent around the house on Sunday.

Re: Sandy
It was a dues paying day for me today but Navigator was right, the Sandy may be a sleeper this Saturday and Sunday. I saw a half dozen fish on the bank at Oxbow today. Heard of a few others. The water has dropped and very little debris still floating in the river. The water is a bit on the high side but very fishable and a good color.
