Default Green Peter Kokanee

Fished Green Peter yesterday. Very nice weather in the afternoon. Fished from 7:30 to 2:00. Caught a total of six Kokanee in the 10"-12" range. Lost a few others. A UV sling blade and a pink hoochie with corn was the best fish getter. Worked depths of 50' and 40' to start with no takes so began moving my gear until 20' was the depth the biters were located. Did not hit aggressively but just tapped the hoochies. At 60' hooked in to a large one that I fought for 5 minutes before breaking off. Never saw it as it made many long runs.Probably one of the Salmon ODFW releasted a few years back. Six LB. test and a light drag was not enough to turn it. Only one other boat on the lake. My usual spot near the island did not produce.

Is the water level coming up at all? We took a drive up there a week and a half ago and you could put a boat in fairly easily. How big of a boat were you fishing out of? and did you have any mud to back through or was the extended ramp under enough water?

Thanks in advance and great report!

Here is very useful link, just move your mouse over the dam and get the latest elevation. GP is up to 940.

I was using downriggers but 2oz of lead at 35 pulls would work also. This turns into meat fishing rather than having fun fighting them. Ralph

Never fished for the bass or the crappie. Any ideas on how and where in the lake?

As far as bass/crappie in GP. first off I don't think there are any crappie in there, as for bass there is a lot of stumps, rocks, and structures around the lake and when we have fished for them (I don't fish them much) its usually in the arms.

Foster has been pretty productive fishing edges, with either bait or lures. Casting into structure has been doing us the best. Anywhere where there is logs/ rocks/ and creek inlets have been the best. Let me know if you need anymore info. The fish have been really nice but take a bit of time to get limits as they are holdover fish and harder to find

Thanks for the information. I will try Foster the next time up.I had listened to a local guide talk,at a fishing club meeting in Salem, about crappie fishing in Green peter so was interested to find out if anyone else had any knowledge in this area.

As far as foster run up the hwy side arm and fish the rock ledges by the little water fall as for gp fish the arms or on the back side of the island its a stump field people call it elk flats as for the crappie rumor in gp not many know this but yes there is crappie there but for some reason only really hold in one spot a guy I work with found them but he will shoot me if I say where but there's some there probably not big numbers in the lake and I've caught bass over 5lbs in gp and foster its about time to start fishing it but with a bass pond in my back yard that produces big fish haven't. Even dewinterized my boat yet

Awesome Nook! I didn't know there was crappie there. I am kok, trout fisherman in that lake and don't focus on bass or panfish! We have caught bluegill and bass on a regular basis. I guess I will have to do a bit more exploring to catch some of the other fish.

Foster has some nice fish. We usually try and fish central oregon, but having these lakes so close, this time of year, may as well fish them. So far this winter we have gone out 4-5 times, and caught 30ish holdover trout, some smaller fish, and a big ugly "Northern Pikeminnow"

As was said, fish the arms and any structure. Rooster tails were producing the other day when it was raining, but casting bait and either letting it lay, or slow retrieve was pretty good as well. I am ready to get up to GP! I'm sure you guys will see me up there soon!

If you see a 24 year old kid cruising around in the jet boat give me a holler!

Red face Re: Green Peter Kokanee

Vance is at the sportsman show clear in the back. Just bought a rod from him due to an unfotunate accident yesterday. Boated 8 trolling 5 to 25 feet and on everything from purple hoochie to green and red spinners. No consistant favorite eveything seemed to work. Went to the show this AM and ran into Vance from Vance's tackle. Good thing too, cause I was going to buy me a new koke rod to replace the cheapie I broke yesterday

Made it to GP for our first Koke trip of the year with my (new to me) 1984 17' Blue Water. There was a little drizzle early on but over all a beautiful day on the lake. What a difference a Year makes, we were on the lake same weekend last year and it was snowing!

Two rod endorsement, Oh Yea! we had a double with a surface fish and one on the Downrigger at one point.

Pink Hoochie combinations with corn and a little Pro Cure UV worked well.

Caught fish from the surface to 30'. Kept 9 Kokes, 1 Chinook. Lost 3 or 4 others and released one nice Rainbow. Great start to the 2010 Koke season! I hope this is a good sign for things to come!

Keep those reports coming so I have a reason to go get the jet boat back from dad's house.

I stocked up on some gear at the show. I spent 60 bucks at the Rocky Mountain tackle booth. And I gave Shasta Tackle a few bucks too.

Fire corn, Fishing Buddy likes using it and it seems to work good. That Koke he's holding was taken with the fire corn on his hoochie rig.

Fished GP again yesterday. Mirror smooth and the fish are biting. Boated 9 during the coarse of the day fishing by myself with two rods. Had two doubles; gettin real used to this two rod thing! There were only two boats on the water until much later in the day. Silver Kokanee Killer was hot followed by a red Kokanee Killer and followed up by Vance's Sockeye Slammer in UV pink.

Nice, hope you guys catch a bunch! I may have to tow the boat up there. Fished Foster again Monday and caught a few. Water level was up a lot and seemed to have spread the fish out of our favorite spots! Caught a lot more natives as well. Hope the fish and biting at GP, I want to get up there!!!!

Dakota,

You may just have me convinced to come fish GP this weekend. I have been meaning to get up there for awhile and now that the lake is gaining some water, it may be worth the extra couple miles. Hope you guys hammer the fish and you may see me there as well! If I see you guys I will try and swing by, Same goes for you. If you see a 19 ft. NR with a 24 year old driving either say hi or get out of the way fast!!!!!! Good luck,
Ben

GP tomorrow.

Ramp should be clear, they have brought it up just over 5 feet in the last 5 days which should put it pretty close to the bottom of the parking area.

Good to hear there are a few fish around. Fished Foster again, as time was a bit short and didn't want to waste anymore fishing time on the extra driving. We did get some nice fish out of Foster again, but it definitely has been gaining on water, ready to fish GP

On the water at 7:40, couldn't believe we were the first ones there with this weather! First fish boated at 7:54, headed back to the ramp at 11:47. Two fishers, 4 rods and 16 fish boated, 15 Kokes, one Chinook. Lost a couple others and put back one trout. Very familiar to last Sat +6.

So far, GP is looking very good for 2010.

This seems like very good but untraditional spring for GP. Historically GP never fishes well before June based on previous years fishing reports. It is good see it is putting out fish early.

I got 4-5 on Friday and yes they are biting earlier than ever before, but they are dinks by GP standards, (would have been suitable for mounting at Suttle last summer) I tossed mine back and probably will not return to the lake until May or I see reports of fish up above 13". The ones I nabbed were all about 10" to 12" and skinny.
