Default what weight rod?

I am looking to upgrade to a new spey rod. I only want one rod that will do it all. I understand that this means that it will have to give in one way or another but I only want one spey rod. The question is that what weight makes the most sense. An 8 weight would be good for large flies and winter but might be a little to over kill for summer. A 7 would be great for summer but would I end up just being frustrated every time I tried to cast larger flies in winter? Any opinions out there? I have talked to many people that say a 7 weight will throw the largest flies but I am not sure I am convinced.

Default Re: what weight rod?

Are you only fishing for steelhead with it, or are you also fishing for the different runs of salmon. There are so many variables, that you should really go cast a few and learn the feel of what you like before you buy.
