Sticky Ferrule
All,
I have two sections of my Spey rod stuck together at the ferrule. Any ideas or suggestions on how to get the apart?
Thanks,
Rob

Re: Sticky Ferrule
I have been having some trouble also. Do people put anything (candle wax) on the ferrules?

Re: Sticky Ferrule
try ice water for several minutes then pull evenly on the rod close to the ferrule. This is a two person job.
clean the ferrules with soap and water and make sure you get all of the soap out of the female ferrule. Use a tip swab. Likely you have some grit in there. Clean the male ferrule as well.
OR
take some swap tips and clean the female ferrule inside with denatured alcohol until a swab is clean. Be careful about getting any alcohol on the rod's finish.

if you do this the wax will accumulate grit and crud. Keep both ferrule parts clean and that should do it. Some people have loose rod ferrules and apply candle wax to make the connection better.

Re: Sticky Ferrule
I had a guide show this to me a few years ago:
1. Stand up and go into a slight crouch.
2. Hold the rod behind your legs at knee level, horizontally. Your arms should hit mid-arm on your leg. Each hand should be on opposite sides of the stuck ferrule.
3. Get into a slightly deeper crouch.
4. Spread your legs and each leg will move your hands further apart. The smooth action of your legs will pull the ferrules apart.
I've used this method numerous times to get VERY STUCK rods unstuck, and you don't strain your guides by twisting the rod.
I hope this helps.

This method often saves me; however, a few weeks ago my Spey rod had a stuck ferrule that wouldn't budge, even with this method. The ticket for me was to wrap the ferrule with a bag of frozen peas for 10-15 minutes, then use the method listed above. Still took a Herculean effort, but eventually the ferrule did separate!

Re: Sticky Ferrule
My advice is take is slow. I've had 2 times where I've sworn it could not come out and it did both times. I think the temp change suggestions are good. DO NOT FORCE IT. It will come undone. Set it aside and then try again later and try not to lose temper (hard).
Next time make sure your connection is cleaned. In most of my "stuck" cases the rod was dirty.

Re: Sticky Ferrule
Thanks to all for the help. Fortunately (or unfortunately) the problem resolved itself this morning with some unwelcome help from my dog. Time to test Sage’s warranty program……

Nice tip -- I'll try that next time on the really stubborn one.
P.S., rb, bummer about the chewed up rod. Sage should treat you right, though.

Re: Sticky Ferrule
I think parrafin wax works pretty well. It helps "seat" the ferrules and makes it easier to get them unstuck when I've pushed them together too forcefully. The method described above works pretty well for getting them apart but the best way is if you have a buddy help you out.
