Default What is this thingy? How do you make it?

I stole a photo from another thread. Not really a stinger hook, but definitely extended hook. How do you make these goodies. You have to hook the braided line onto the hook stub somehow.

Haha, that's Andy's photo from the articulated fly swap thread. I'll hopefully be seeing one of those hook setups with some black/blue rabbit fur on it soon!

The photo shows the rigging for a MOAL leech. To start, take a hook and put a cone head on it. Then take about 6" of braided line, double it over so it's only 3", then lay the braided line against the hook shank; you want the tag ends of the braided line towards the head of the hook and the loop section of the brained line trailing behind the hook. Now take some thread and tightly secure the braided line to the hook shank. Some folks will use a cement or epoxy over the thread to help secure the braided line. Once the epoxy is dry, you snip the hook point off at the bend. Now add a hook to the end of the braided line and you're done!

Double over your braid, I use 65lb Tuffline. Feed the braid through the eyelet of the octopus hook. Make a single half hitch around the hook with the loop from your doubled up braid. Feed the braid through your cone, through the eyelet on your cut off hook then back through the cone. With both tag ends of the braid make two half hitches on the cut off hook behind the cone. Lightly snug them up with you fingers. Then with the cut off hook in your vise use your right hand to hold it straight and use a pair of pliers to grab the octopus hook and put even pressure on the whole setup til the half hitches tighten and lock the cone against the eyelet on the cut off hook.

This is how the designer of the MOAL rigs his, its fast strong and not in the least bit messy

I cut and clean up my hooks before rigging some guys do it after, either way works

Red face Re: What is this thingy? How do you make it?

I rig them similar to Sothereiwas' description. I have never had the brainded line pull out, even when the fly is snagged; I have busted 20lb leader without the dacron separating.

The biggest advantage is that the fly has a flexible body that moves in the current (top fly):

You can't get that flexibility from a fly tied on a fixed hook shank.

The disadvantage is that they are a pain to tie...

Here is a pretty good tutorial on how to prepare stinger hook rigs for MOALs and Intruders.

Hope this helps....

Thanks for the help. Looks like most of the fly is tied onto the shank of the lead hook and the trailer is used for short strikes?

Steve,
After tying on the trailer hook and materials onto the main hook you clip the whole hook point off. The trailer is not for short strikes. It is the main hook.

Here is part 2 of the stinger tutorial. In this segment you'll see how to tie a MOAL. Note that the tier breaks the "body" hook when the fly is complete.
