Greetings Ifishers & Lurkers!
![]() Back by popular demand and without further ado welcome to the 2010 Springer Report Thread! As that "crazy" time of the year approaches, otherwise know as "Springer Season" I found it has been helpful the last few years to start this thread so we can look in one place for a plethora of reports. ![]() Please post your reports on this thread... the report dosent need to have a lot details, or any for that matter, just I went out and caught or did not catch. I think bad reports are especially helpful in letting us know if there are fish around. Good luck to everyone - hopefully this thread is full of great reports, smiling faces and shiny chrome piggies when its all said and done! Let the SHABAMALAMS commence! ![]()

Here is my first report... its second hand but from a verifiable source.
A friend of a friend put a 25lb clipped springer in his boat while fishing on the hook yesterday down around Clatskanie (sp?). ![]() By the way I will be posting live reports via my twitter account this year complete with pictures... for those of you that want to follow the live blow by blow there is a link below my signature on this post. ![]() Good luck everyone and see you out there!

In 1 hour this morning sitting in the Red Lion at the Quay restaurant by the I-5 bridge, I saw one 15 ft smokercraft come by. 2 guys, salmon net visible, but no rods in evidence. They must have limited.

Enjoy the fishing but don't burn yourselves out before the season gets going.

Burn out is part of the disease! A very addictive disease refered to by the medical profession as Springeritus. Symptoms include running to the tackle store and buying up Green label herring, Brads (wanna be a plug cut herring) Kwik fish just in case there is a color you like even though the fish may not, charging up batteries on the boat, tying mooching rigs with the latest greatest Flurocarbon leader material, telling the boss you are going to be having family issues and will need some sporadic time off during the coming weeks.......and on and on and on it goes! And.......the season has started!

No wonder there is a Green label herring shortage! I just saw your freezer on Twitter! Now the bad news...if you look real close at the small print on the packages, they say they spin clockwise not conter clockwise. What a waste!!!!!!!!

Nearly 1900 herring are good for at least 4-5 springers right?

I have seen some threads of people asking some questions regarding gear and techniques to get into springers... the search feature is a powerful tool here as much valuable information resides within the archives of Ifish!
Here is a thread that those of you with questions might find helpful! http://www.ifish.net/board/showthrea...=springer+tips

Thanks to all of you for the great information. This is only my second year of fishing the Columbia for springers. I had some luck around Vancouver and Longview last year. I fished once at Cathlamet, saw lots of boats but did not connect. How far down the river do people fish for springers? I have heard nothing about fishing near the mouth, was told that springers don't bite right out of the salt. Is this a fact or myth?

Here's my first report.
Spent the first hour twirling a brined herring yesterday after putting the boat in its slip Tuesday. It was great to be home. Spent another hour or so this morning and witnessed a net up...then down. One of my good buddies had his first hookup of the year. Fin. Water temp about 46...chilly, slightly browner than I like, but fairly clean. Its too early to get excited about catching, but it isn't too early to get excited about fishing.

I read this report and caught no fish for 8 hours of hoping. Guess I will wet a line Saturday.
Congrats to the Sultan for his first hookup in that ugly boat he is borrowing. ![]() ![]() BTW, Pop's is dragging his lip right now. It's February 5th and no fish for 7 attempts. But I have faith because I saw gill buds developing on both sides of his neck.

Trolled on Friday for two hours between the Green Can and Sellwood -- then above Sellwood a bit and then down across from Willamette Park. Most boats were sturgeon fishing, but there were a few salmon fishers out there. Didn't see a lot of action of any kind. No early springer for me, marked a lot of something, but not salmon (arches were all wrong on the graph). Water temp was 47 degrees with limited visibility (but not as muddy as I suspected it would be).
Tuna! (1,000th post) - drat...I guess it's 1001 that does it!
