Two Rod Tips
Looks like this weekend will be my first trip of the year. Anybody have any tips on using two rods per person. Two of us with four rods. We both have a downriggers, lead core, side planner and our flat lining rods ready to go.

Re: Two Rod Tips
At speeds at or above 1.5 mph the Shuttle Hawk can be very handy for two rods. My FF shows the Shuttle Hawk so I know how deep I am fishing with it.

Re: Two Rod Tips
Sounds like you are ready to go. For me I have been running as many as 6 lines off my boat with a single little manual downrigger. I try to get side to side spread and depth spread with adjacent rods using variable weights and setbacks. The shuttlehawk is nice for getting two off the rigger.

Re: Two Rod Tips
Just last Sunday I got on the lake with my home made sideplaners and they were great. I was out 50 feet on each side of the boat and then two poles off the fantail angled about 60deg to the outside with different weights and line out distances. We fished from 7:30am to 4:05pm and never a hang up.
We caught a limit each of nice 15 and 16 inch rainbows.

Re: Two Rod Tips
You know I have a couple of shuttle hawks, might just have to bust those out again and give them another try. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: Two Rod Tips
Make wide turns..... I haven't retied the mono to braid on 3 of the 4 rods we used last weekend. I had the biggest ball of knots I had ever seen at the end of the day, coincidentally we had nice Mac on the end of one of them (we hand-lined him in) so I am not sure he didn't tangle the rest together.

Re: Two Rod Tips
Hey Jimmy, have fun! I'd look into the "Yellow Bird" side planer -- under $20 and you can rig it with two releases so it drops completely away when you hook a fish. You have to circle back and recover it, but a quick cheap way to broaden your spread. I figure you flatlining rip trollers will just use the second rod to compare the effectiveness of two different plugs or the same plug in two colors. You'll just need to train your foot to run the trolling motor you you can rip a rod with each hand!

That and a few other posts gave me a thought. Several guys have mentioned that Lyman plugs get a ripping action when hooked into a downrigger. I would think that you could run a lyman back and drop it down a couple feet with a downrigger then run a shallower running stick bait above it and hand rip it? Dunno I have not done much ripping but it makes sense in my little mind.

Do the same thing but use a heavy release on the back side so it stays attached. The front one releases with a fish, the back one keeps it on the line and you just unclip it as it approaches the boat, then land the fish once the rest of the line is in. No need to chase it down or have it slide down to a bead and swivel near your lure

Re: Two Rod Tips
Here are a couple of photos of my stuff, one of the top of the 4' tower, and one of the starboard Planer.

I was very pleased with the performance of the new stuff, now I can fine tune it as time goes by.

Nice setup
I see you made your own tower, what did you use for pulleys/cranks for retrieving your boards and storing the line?

Re: Two Rod Tips
I have been sitting back reading all your post about getting more than two lines out at once. Myself I do not use a Shuttle hawk, it will not give you the spread, one should be looking for. If I want more lines off one down rigger, I will use one rod, lock it in the release and 20' above lock in an fixed slider called an Elberta Clip'er, giving me two lures working off the same rod, which has landed me plenty of fish.
At the same time a couple of Slide Diver lite bites and Dipsy divers off steel line and maybe a copper line rod out. Main thing is to get everything away from the boat.
If you look at guys running long lines out 200' to 300' and ask them why so far back, most will not know the true reason. It's because when you go by in a boat fish will go down and out, after a few seconds will return to where they where. So if you have everything down and away from your boat you will end up with more fish and not be dragging lines 300' behind your boat.
You Kokanee guys need to look at the Slide Diver Lite bite. You will catch more fish off the slide diver than you will off your down riggers. I have a few friends that are Capts on the great Lakes and on there boats you will not even find a down rigger. There using Slide Divers, Dipsy Divers ( to heavy for Kokanee ) copper line rods and Planer boards.
I do not not benefit financially personally off any of the items I have talked about. I just use them to put fish in the boat

Re: Two Rod Tips
Moose,
I picked up a few of the slide diver lite bites. You mention running them on copper line. They say in their online video that mono is fine for running them. I am wondering if you have a recommendation for how light of mono you can run with the slide diver. I would hate to run too light of mono and start donating my kokanee setups and the slide divers to the lake while I learn by trial and error.
Thanks

I went to the local fence company, and bought 1 5/8 post, then I drilled and mounted some hooks 1 foot apart and I just hand line them in and out. It works great, and is cheap, I'll get a photo later. The pulleys are d
from the tack and saddle department at the local GrangeCo-Op, that is where I got the hooks too.

The one in the photo is 4', but I have a 6 footer all drilled and ready to go if I choose. So far I am pleased with the 4 footer. I have only used it once. Maye I will change it all out after a few more trips. I also found out what happens when you go backwards to get a snag-up freed. LOL

Re: Two Rod Tips
Thanks for all the tips and idea's. I hope to make a post after the game on Sunday with our results from this weekend at Crescent Lake. My goal is one fish off my planner board and a brown over 5.

Yep that going backwards is about as much fun as your boat coming off the trailer going down the road.
One thing about it , no one ever does it twice. When you have the big boards out and lines on them you just have to keep going and cut your loss

I have been fishing with 2 rods from the bank, and my tip is to keep 1 rod in your hands and the other in the holder
