Default Winter Steelhead fly size/profile for low water conditions?

Do you guys like to fish smaller (1-1.5") profile... like a 2 to 6 hook size, non-articulated, unweighted type fly.... when the water gets this low and clear? I tried a few on Sunday (no luck yet), thinking they would be a little less threatening to the fish... not to mention fewer hang-ups. Agree or disagree regarding the first point? Thanks.

I think when the water is low like it is you can get away with a summer-type setup. Floating line and wet fly. Fished a river yesterday and water temp was 47 degrees, definitely warm enough for the dry line especially with more and more wild fish nosing into the local tribs.

I have had luck using a floating line, an intermediate poly leader, and a drab/pale fly like a "lady caroline". When the water is low (summer flow low), the fish can be more spooky, so your presentations should be solid and predictable. But remember, your searching for aggressive fish. So if you can turn over and present a nice 3" intruder to your fish, chances are it'll smack it. But remember, they are steelies......they make the rules.
