Default Which type of boat do you perfer...and why?

OK, now it looks like it's my turn to be shoppiong for a new (used) boat. I'm stuck on the type of boat to buy. I have an open sled now but I'm considering a forward helm boat...hmmmmm
Yes, I know lots depend on what type of fishing I do. But the ride out to wherever in an open Sled is sometimes BRRRRRRRRRRutal (hey Mark), So my question is this:

Which type of boat do you perfer and WHY???

I went from an open sled with a tiller to a forward helm with a v-8. I have a 21' Alumaweld Formula Vee with a full top. For running out to the fishing hole it sure beats freezing your hind end off like in my old sled. It can't be beat for sitting on anchor type fishing and it is a lot more comfortable as a summertime family boat.

Open sleds definitely have their advantages also. Much more comfortable to spend all day trolling (or backtrolling) out of, and as an added bonus, if you smile alot while you are running you can get a nice bug collection in your teeth.

I prefer a wooden runabout with a deep-V hull, circa 1958. 1962 35hp Kiekhaefer Mercury, Full canopy, "Mr. Heater" and a LAWN CHAIR ...

"Don't laugh - it's paid for!" Actually I get a lot of compliments, classic antique that she is.

I prefer center console boats for river running! I like to stand while driving so I can see more and also have something to hold onto (steering wheel). Plus you can fight a hot fish all around the boat when necessary.

If you want strictly a fishin machine tiller is the way to go. I found I had a much easier time getting my wife to buy into the forward helm, windshield, and air ride seats. The kids like the ability to water ski behind it. I also like staying dry when making that run back to Hammond in the afternoon when the wind kicks up.

My favorite boat depends on where I'm fishing. Tributaries-flat bottom w/ tiller & pump.
Mainstem-Windshield, top, front helm, prop.
I figure I really need at least 4 different boats.
Don't forget the cuddy cabin for weekends and catarafts for creeks. Oh yea, lotta uses for a good drift boat. Hope this helps.

Gotta agree with gofish. I need at least 4 boats. The SeaSport 24 for ocean and mainstem Columbia. The 21' open sled with pump and tiller handle for the tribs, and a drift boat for the upriver floats. Oh yeah, I forgot the 45' Grand Banks trawler for gunkholing from Seattle to Juneau.

My last boat was an open tiller, Super Vee. I considered it the ultimate fishin' machine. However, I now own a 20' Intruder with forward steering and a windshield...my god, it's nice to run up river without tears in your eyes and a half a brain freeze!

I still wouldn't mind owning a tiller model...for about 3 weeks in August !

Hogtide, I've often considered getting a forward helm sled instead of my tiller handle. What are you finding about the interior room, handling and fishability compared to the open sled?

I sure wouldn't mind the windshield when the wind is howling and the water gets rough. How many times have you gotten soaked running against a quartering wind while the forward helm boats cruise by dry?

Excellent reply guys... Thanks for you opinions. I think my mind is now leaning towards a forward helm boat. I guess I have froze long enough in my open sled. Time to stay dry and warm. And who knows... maybe the wife might join me.

SJP has some good questions about room, fishablity. I wait to hear the reply.
