Grand Ronde
I fishers, I am going to head to the Grand Ronde river. What are the best rod lengths/weights and flys to use on this river? Should I go with an 7 or 8 or can it be done with a 6? Also sinking line or tapered line?

Re: Grand Ronde
Those are summer fish and have been in the system a long time. Better to fish them in the fall. Winter fish are around in all western systems I would focus my attention there. 7 or 8 weight for winters depending on which system you are fishing.

What is wrong with fishing for fish that have been in the system for a long time?
Anyway the Rond is loded with fish this year! you would be fine with a 7 or and 8. The thing you should remember though is that the wind can pick up at times in the canyon and when that happens the heavier rod comes in handy.
Ohh and this time of year I would either fish with a rapid decent sink tip or fish nymph and indicator. Due to cold water conditons these fish are not going to move far for an offering.
hope that helps

No offense, but many of those fish are there for a purpose, they are tired and ready to spawn in the near future. I'm not saying don't do it but it's not real sporting. There are fresh hot fish to be had out this way that will put up some resistance.
Gotta go catch one now. See ya later.

There is a reason they upped the bag limit to 5 a day on those rivers. They don't want to deal with that many fish at the hatchery. Those fish are fun to fish for and are still fighting hard (i know i was down there the last two weeks). Also the coast is a long way from NE Oregon.

Slow and Low is right. The grande Ronde fish arent going to have the spunk that the coastal fish will have right now. Also the true Winter fish will be prime eating, where the Ronde fish eat ok.
A steelhead is a steelhead though, and I've never eaten a GR fish I didnt enjoy at the dinner table. One of my reasons for fishing steel on the Ronde isnt the caliber of fish. It is the increased odds of catching fish, and it is the scenery. Also the nice flows, and perfect riffles, runs, and pools. Fun little river.
Long story is that to each there own. Just get out there and put the hurt on!
As for fly selection....Green butt skunk, or something that is red/white/and black. Keep it low in the water column.

Re: Grand Ronde
Make sure and try not the catch any wild fish as they need their energy to do "the deed".

Do you have any tips for us as to how we can target just hatchery fish. I certainly wouldnt want to accidentally hook a nate steelhead!

Re: Grand Ronde
Similar...super easy quick tie, brass bead, peacock thorax with flash back, hot wire body and rubber legs if you feel like it but not neccesary. Takes about 90 seconds to tie. Same pattern but on a red #6 gammi octopus hook with red hot wire was hot at south junction last year.

Ready to spawn? Not sporting? Haven't spent too much time on the GR, eh?. These fish are not exactly chrome, but they are in fine shape. They bite agressively, fight well and taste great....and there are lots of them.

Re: Grand Ronde
Bogans fishing derby started last week and the weather is very mild. The crowds have increased big time. fishing this week has been slower than the previous few weeks.

Re: Grand Ronde
The water just came up in the last day or 2 and heard that the fishing had picked up... the Cottonwood fish are in and it should be good from now until April. 50 degrees in Feb is unheard of over here! Usually it's blown out with weather like this. Get some!
