Default Lead sinker bottom on fishfinder...

Why do we throw lead out there knowing we will likely break off? Think about all the damn lead in the bottom of the Bonneville pool. Jeez. Hasn't someone come up with a way to tie a rock/boulder to their sinker line and sacrifice it instead? I'm not an econut, but lead is not good when it is expected to be lost. Kinda like why the NYPD came out with Nyclad bullets. No one needs it in there bodies, either through the air we breath or the fish we eat. Doc

Graham, nice to see you thinking, Keep me posted by email on you catching. The spot we fished last time still kicking out fish, now the B run is coming in. It's like catching a cold, anyhone can do it. Think this lead thing through a little farther. Lead is small in diameter, stays put in the heavy current and does polute the water. Now, that being a given, some people use railroad spike, they are heavier, bigger and probably cause train wrecks when to many are removed from the same section of tracks. As for rocks and boulders, just to hard to cast, hard to tie on, good for the river and enviroment but they fill the river from the bottom up. Which leaves us a choice, fill the river with rocks and boulders, railroad spikes or small pieces of lead. We gotta use something heavy enough to stay down and small enough to cast. Another thought for you, When you fish for steelhead, park your rubber boat and use bait and divers until it works for you. Once you find the slots, the ones with fish, then start using the plugs. If you don't find em, ya cant catch em. Let's make a run to the Cowlitz. Your boat or my rubber one, no matter to me.

What would workj to cast instead of lead? Sometimes it needs to be heavy for heavy current and sometimes you have to cast it a long ways. Hopw far can you cast a rock?
