1/12-1/13 fish stories?
How did you do this weekend?
If you took this weekend, and were to rate the year's season by it, is it a 1, meaning worst season, to a 10 meaning the best?
I say....... 1!!!
I'm going to go see if I can improve that though!

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
I'd rate it a 1 as well. Nice thing about it being a 1 is that it can't get any worse. At least I hope it can't.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
I'd say it depends on what you are fishing for . Its been limits the last 8 trips for me and for the others with me. 29 keeper sturgeon so far taken and more released. So I would say 8/9 for the weekend.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
I'm talking steelies on the coast, sorry...
And, I'm using not only my catch experience, but local reports from talking with people.
I haven't spoken with very many, but those I have, hadn't had great things to say.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
Using this weekend as the season factor I would rate this "season" a 3 compared to the last several Full winter seasons. I would already rate this winter steelhead season as the best in about eight years. Things did slow down this weekend but isn't that why we call it fishing and not catching. It always seems to work this way. A great season shapes up, news gets out then the bottom drops out. Leaves the people who rely on news reports scratching their heads, wondering what all the fuss is about. Let's get on with a ten!!

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
Jennie,
If you are just talking this past week-end I would say a 10!! I caught my first steelhead ever!!!! It was downstream from your place about a mile. I am really excited to have finally caught one. It was a nice Fat Hen about 10 to 12 lbs. . She was such a pretty fish she grew an extra fin as I was reeling her in.  . You know what , I felt good getting a picture of me holding her and really felt super when I put her back in the river. Oh by the way, what a beautiful river the Kilchis is. I enjoyed the day so much ,I fell in the water when I was getting in the drift boat. Oh well , I was a liitle bit wet for a while. It was my first drift boat ride. Thanks a million to my friend Steve for letting me go along with him. We did see one boat on Thursday hook into a chinook. They were still playing it as we drifted out of site so we didn't get to see if they finally boated it though.
If I was to rate the season , I would say a 4.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
South Coast has been very good when fishable.
I have heard great things about the Millicoma as well as the Siuslaw, and the Coquille has been fishing real well.
Factory fish seem to be health and full of life, wild fish also seen healithy. I hjave boated a 3-salt fish two trips in a row, both fish were wild hens... very pretty.
Fishing pressure hs been moderate for the Coquille system... and everyone is hooking up.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
All I can say is thank god for last friday, cus it was honey dues all day yesterday, and high water today. The color was good but it was way to fast should have stayed home and pestered my wife !!! But NOOOO,I took the drift boat down and when I went to get out at the takeout,I snagged my waders on the oar lock tore a huge hole in my waders and then being half way out and stuck the boat starts moveing with the current and I FELL IN !!!good thing it was only a foot deep at least no one saw me to it,put about a 1 ft tear in my hip waders :depressed: ,Guess the fish gods were getting even for the big fish I caught friday
OH I know maybe I'll catch an even bigger fish now   .I would rate the day as a 4 cus anyday fishing has to be that good.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
I would call it a 1, because that is all the steelhead I have caught this winter. My wife would call it a 10, because that is her tally for the winter (4 this weekend).
Do I sound bitter?

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
I'm going to call this weekend a 1 as well. fished the siletz from ths steel bridge to camp 13. started at dawn fished till 11:30, nada. the river came up about 6-8 inches while we were there but stayed green. my partner wanted to go to moonshine park for some combat fishing (yeucch!) there were several fish on the bank and most of the people we talked to said that the bite shut down around 9am when the water started to rise. the only high point of the trip was that i picked up the polariods from last year that the logsden store took of me last year with fish.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
Its been a 2 for sure up here. The river I fish is blown with less than 1' visibility. Managed to hook one fish in over 10 hours on the water, not good numbers. Oh well...

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
Friday I took a friend from work for a 1 hour fishing trip, he is a good fisherman but has never successfully applied his skill to steelhead. It was our second after-work trip, but this time he managed to wash off the 30 year old skunk. He hooked and landed 3. I managed 1 friday night.
Saturday morning I took another steelhead virgin friend fishing. He was deflowered by 10:00 a.m., a two-timer by 11. I spent the last hour sitting on the bank behind him making snide comments, because I had 3 chrome hens on the bank @ 9:30

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
Drifted from Barton to Carver today and had to let my first ever caught Steelhead go, too small and wild too. Had 3 really nice hits but no hook ups. I'll give the weather a 8 and fishing about a 1. Maybe next weekend will be better.
See ya on the river :-)

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
I'd rate this entire last week a 1. I managed to fish 4 times between Tuesday and Sunday and while I did manage to hook 4 fish, I didn't bank any. For that matter, in all 4 days I only saw 2 fish landed. I fished Eagle Creek, the Necanicum and Fall Creek and while there were tons of fish visible in all of these rivers it seemed like they all had lock-jaw.
Before the last big rain, fish were a given on any of these rivers. Anybody care to share their ideas on what's made all of these available fish stop bitting since the last rain? Fatigue? More forage in the water? Desensitisation after seeing a million corky's, spinners and jigs go by?

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
I have found that fish you can see are more interested in spawning than biting. Even if you do fish for them, you don't really want them to bite.
I used to spend time sight casting to fish, but I have learned to accept visible fish as nothing more than eye-candy. Something to watch for entertainment while I eat lunch. In the low clear water that exists during 90% of my winter fishing on the smaller streams, I fish where I could not see a fish if there was one. An interesting connection between steelhead fishing and religion could be made, but suffice it to say,....Learn where the fish hold, then, You just gotta have FAITH, brother.
If you are fishing on Hatchery streams, I have found that a big rain like we had last week will suck the majority of the fish up into the hatchery and it will take several days for the numbers of fresh fish to climb again. I catch fish in all water conditions, but dropping steelhead green water is my least favorite water to fish. Gin clear is my favorite water to fish because I can narrow the fish holding spots down to a much smaller number.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
The last few weeks have been a real ZERO!!!!
I'm sick as a dog, and it's not getting much better. Screw it, I'm drifting the Clackamas in the morning. If the paper say a guy died in a drift boat while fishing the Clackamas River...
Then Uncle Bob died with a smile on my face.
You think I'm kidding. I feel like CRAP!!!
what do you think
At home...head pounding - coughing up a lung
or
In the boat...head pounding - coughing up a lung
See ya!

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
My Sunday was a TEN, not because of the catching... We took two boats and only got one
native per boat but not for lack of effort...My
7yr old son didn't really appreciate the early morning cold at first, the dew on the boat had turned to frost. My good friend started to cast for him,
then he coached, encouraged and untangled his mishaps all day long. By the end of the day, he was fishing independently and it was hard to get the rod from him to put away. It was fate that my
friend was rewarded with a solid strike while boondogging. Upon reflection this morning, I thought how proud I was of my son and how lucky I am to have friends like Kenny and Mike. Rousting
him at 06:00 am and floating from 7:30 to 3:00pm,
that's a long time for someone his age. I think
he's ready to go again.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
I am living proof that even a blind squirel finds a nut once in a while. Sunday I caught 2 hatchery fish, despite being skunked the previous 4 trips. Fished the riffles between The Guide Shop and Sollie.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
Well I don't feel so bad now. This is my first year of trying for winter steelhead. I have been out twice. Only one full day on the sandy and I haven't had a hook up yet. one half day on the wilson and an hour on the Nestucca. Nada yet but hopefully soon I will get out for a whole day and hook up. I call it a 3. Cause I am learning a little more each time.

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
Using only this past Sunday as criteria for rating my entire season, I'll give it a 7. I've had higher number days this season, but the run is usually waning by now in the river that I mainly fish, and I still managed a multiple fish day. Life is good!

Re: 1/12-1/13 fish stories?
I'd consider this last weekend a 10. Had a couple of guys with us that had never caught a keeper sturgeon before. Both went home with nice 43" keepers. Stayed out a bit longer than any of us intended to, but it really paid off. The bite really took off just before the sun set and was still going strong when we put the second one in the boat. Both of their wifes stopped whinning after supper last night.
