Default The swing!

What is the trick to slowing down the swing without putting enough tension to pull you fly up to the surfice?

The river will dictate speed for the most part. if your fly is coming to the surface you are fishing water that is too fast...in general.

I think your question is too general. Be more specific.

Follow the line from behind with the tip of your rod, instead of leading it.

Don't mend so much. I cast close to 90 degrees, give my line one mend to line everything out, then let it fish. Every time you mend it raises your sinktip- fly up in the water colum. Cast, one big mend. Let it fish. If I feel my fly is pulling to hard or moving to fast I exstend my rod arm toward the fly, or take a step down stream toward my fly. Hope this helps.

You can also slowly lower your rod hand and take a few steps down river if you think that will help

I guess I am doing something right because I do it just as everyone mentioned.

Slow and Low, your answer is kind of why I asked my question. I do just about everything mentioned above. Strong pullback mend to line everything out, a few seconds of no pressure to allow for some sinking, then I kind of guide the line around with a steady follow with the rod tip. But, I was actually thinking today if my swing speed was at the mercy of the current, or if I could actually do anything that could slow it down.

I rarely mend after the initial pullback (winter) and almost never mend for summer fish. I will fish the shooting head with as little running line in the water as possible.

I'm pretty sure you will figure out what works where. Good luck to you.
