Kelly Point 1/12 and 1/13 More of the same...
I would like to say I did good today, but I cant. Three rods,4 shakers. :depressed: There were quite a few keepers taken but I guess I got some kind of funk going on. It was one of those days where I saw some boats perform like us and there were some that werent 25 feet away that nailed them. Maybe it's time to wait until July......
On a side note I would like to congradulate the folks in the green Alumaweld Intruder, Hull # WN 8264 RH, on being inconsiderate jerks! With all the area on the river, why you had to anchor not 25 feet away and a boat lenght BELOW me is beyond me. Gee I guess I wasnt like fishing there or anything. Maybe since I wasnt catching anything you figured it didnt matter. Did it ever dawn on you why I was casting a foot or 2 away from you? Maybe I should have just pinged my lead off your hull.... I assume you were a guide, but had no guide stickers, so I cant say for sure. It looked like a giude operation. Anyway thanks for being an idiot.
Sorry folks for the rant.

I've seen that happen alot on the
willamette for springers and shad.
My idea is if its someone new to fishing,
or just dosen't know any better tell them
in a frendly way, or just wait. they
will probly move on soon. But a guide or
someone who just looks rude. why not pull
up and anchor 25 feet below them!

I know how you feel dog, I always try to anchor a good distance from other folks by Kelley Pointe. There is so much water, that there really isn't just "one spot" that is superior to any others! I always try to belch or break wind when someone pulls up too close to remind them that a respectful distance is preferred. If the person was really a guide, then they should be twice as ashamed.

Rich, I offered you the 20 or so fresh smelt I dipped on Wednesday. All you had to do was pick them up on the way by. Sure couldnt have hurt.
I have heard plenty from you about my willamette springer fishing from last year, Just when should I return the favors with this outstanding sturgeon fishing you got going on
You are using a hook in that bait, correct?

I've had this happen before. That's why I keep a couple of extra canisters of air in the boat for my airhorn...I just wait until they get all setup, pole in the water, feet up and beer cracked...then I start with short bursts about every 10 or 15 seconds...

Hey Bro,
Sounds like you had a day as frusterating as I on one of my last Kelley Point postings. You can try all the things mentioned above but what really needs to be practiced is a little respect. People should pull their head out of their @$$ and it would be a better day on the water.
Pilar mentioned location, location, location. I have to agree fully but sometimes is it worth it to put up with the headaches of morons and inconsiderate low lifes to catch a few fish. Even if you get there before most of the crowd, people end up throwing anchor 11 inches away from you and ultimately ends up in a circus. I am glad however that your post did better than mine on getting people aware of how they **** people off with inexperience on just blatent disrespect.
I am hoping to get out next week sometime and will shoot you an e-mail on the results. My boat is still at the marina and will be there until Friday (earliest) but hopefully I can make it out. See ya on the river.......

Re: Kelly Point 1/12 and 1/13 More of the same...
Ok I just changed the title to add today's adventure, or lack there of....
We were the first boat in the area. Anchored up, and sent the bait to the bottom. 5 minutes 1 shaker. 20 minutes later, bang 43" keeper. Good so far. We added one more shaker for the hour then NOTHING!!! :depressed: We reposioned to fish the edge. Another boat anchor next to us, Another Alumaweld but they knew what they were doing. I then spent the rest of my day watching them land 3 very nice keepers. Wonder if they got the fourth?
If you want to catch keeper's, look for me and anchor up on my side and I guarrentee you will go home with fish! I will just be a spectator.
I cant wait for springers.........

Been there dog    I've had those days too. Oh well what can you do. As soon as the guys catching fish next to you pull out, and you slyly slide over where they were, a boat will come along and anchor where you were and hose the fish while you watch in disgruntled amazement. I can say we were into fish yesterday but it was not as good as past days last week. Got 4 nice keepers by 8:30 or so then the bite tapered off a lot. We were at the dock by 10:30 or so limited. A friend of mine went today and said it was slower but they got thier keepers. Better luck next time.

Re: Kelly Point 1/12 and 1/13 More of the same...
OK, now that the fish is in the freezer.
In my last 4 trips I have seen 17 keepers boated all within 100 feet of me. I have covered this hole from head to toe. The fish are there. I have never seen so many arches on the fishfinder (no I'm not leaving it on. :rolleyes). You can feel them brush against the line and feel the skutes. Sometimes the fish will hit the bait with a couple good pecks then leave. I never saw a bite from the keeper I got today. I just noticed a slight pull. I picked up the rod and could feel and ever so soft tug. I barely hooked him in the corner of the mouth.
Pilar, I have done and paid attention to everything you mentioned.
Bait, yeah I guess it's payback time. Was I using a hook? Thats like asking if it's plugged in. Wait, I better go check.
Fishin Magician, that is the lesson I have learned.
Now the question is do I go back for more punishment? Right now I dont want to be anywhere near Kelly Point.

Rich
Maybe we name your boat the "Rally Squad" and swap your poles for some pom poms and you can cheer on the other fishermen.

Dog
You could hook up with someone who is going and learn something you didn't know as well as teach someone something they might not have known. I have done this a few times and learned a lot as well as forged lasting friendships in the process.

Waterdog, Location, Location, Location...
Its no accident that a few boats are nailing fish left and right. There is a narrow 'kill zone', along the edge of the deep hole. This is why all the boats are jostling for the one patch of water. The fish gather there when the tide runs out, to grab whatever falls into the hole .. Fish are available all over out there, as pointed out above, but they are always in the sweet spot in greater numbers.
Other things matter too. Your weight must be the right size. Just heavy enough to hold your rig still. As light as possible. The slider must work. Last but not least what you do when bit matters.
I've noticed a lot of slack bites lately. Sometimes this turns into a buried rod when the slack is gone and fish takes off. Usually though you reel in a hammered or missing bait. The only way I've found to beat it is to hold the rod and keep the slack to a minimum.
