Mann Lake/Chickahominy 2010 Update
I've been getting some inquiries about what the plan is for Mann Lake and the goldfish problem. I just met with the new local ODFW fisheries biologist and learned the rumors are true...there is a plan to rotenone the lake mid to late summer. If the water level does not show any appreciable rise this spring, there is a chance of it being pumped dry with a kill that way. Unfortunately, neither may kill off any eggs which may be present at the time, from my understanding. It sounds like a couple fish conservation groups are willing to help in the removal of the Lahontan Cutthroat to be placed elsewhere/used as breeding stock.
So, good news for Mann enthusiasts. We can only hope that the lake level will once again be restored to levels we have not seen in nearly a decade; however, there is a question regarding ground water levels due to nearby irrigation which may be affecting Mann Lake levels. As I've mentioned here before, some of the small artesian springs found near the lake haven't been noted for several years now, even in relatively good water years. Let's just keep our fingers crossed.
Chickahominy most likely suffered a nearly complete fish kill this past summer. However, should there have been trout survival, since the lake has not completely froze over this winter there is a small chance that a few hardy fish may make it through until spring. Time will only tell, but it doesn't appear anyone is holding their breath.
