2slow,
I have built quite a few rods that I have made my own decals for.My question would have to be on what particular day is your buddy going to be fishing with a representative from the NFL trade mark division??
Further more I dont see many people getting fined for haveing a NFL team tatoo on thier body, same goes for Harley Davidson merchandise. Ever been to a swap meet and seen some of the junk with "trademark" names on it? they could get rich on the 100,000.00 lawsuits if they chose to pursue them.
Back to the decal application process, I was asked to build a Rod for a professional org. here in Oregon a couple of months ago and this how it is done and what you need to do it according to an article from a leading rod building magazine.
Photo shop
A good printer
HP "Premium Ink Jet" paper (24lb stock)
Kyrlon Crystal Clear Acrylic spray
3M Super 77 spray adhesive
Rod blank or dowel smaller than intended place of decal on blank
Black Sharpie
Tweezers
Print copied logo and photo shop to desired size set printer to a minimum of 720dpi or a max of 1440dpi, note anything over 1440dpi is not noticeable on decals this small, select paper type.
Let print dry, then apply 2 coats of enamlel front and back.
pre form decal with dowel or blank let sit for 24 hrs
I like to make the decals rectangular to wrap around entire blank surface apply black sharpie to edges to cover white paper edges where you cut decal to size.
Gently unroll decal from dowel or blank and spray with adhessive.
Place decal on blank and coat with 2 coats of thread preserver pay close attension to the edges as they wil want soak up epoxy and could effect the label.
I like to have a black background on my decals so that they somewhat match the blank color.
If you have any questions on this ask me and I will walk you through it.
