Re: Painting and replacing hooks on plugs?
On a Tadpolly, simply taking off both trebles, adding a size seven barrel swivel, and a 1/0 siwash to both front and back works well. For the Wiggle Wart, taking off both trebles and the rear split ring, adding a size four bead chain swivel to the belly, placing the extra split ring from the rear on the bead chain, and then attaching a 1/0 siwash works good.

Re: Painting and replacing hooks on plugs?
Tadpolly - Remove both the belly and rear split ring and trebble hook. Get the size of split rings that are one-size larger. Add two split rings to the rear, then add your Vision siwash, hook pointing up.
Warts. Remove the rear split ring and trebble hook. Remove the belly trebble hook, but leave the split ring. Add on a 4-bead barrel swivel (might be called a chain swivel) to the belly split ring. Add another split ring to the end of your chain swivel. You'll need a 6-bead barrel swivel for MagWarts. Add your Vision Siwash. You can get away with just clamping the siwash to the bead swivel, but I personally tend to find that the hook binds up a bit, so I run that extra split ring. Also, it's a lot easier to remove a hook via a split ring.
HotShots - Same as the Tads.

Re: Painting and replacing hooks on plugs?
I use a #2 triple grip Gammie treble hook off the back of my Tadpollies... and warts.
I like the treble over the siwash for two reason, one is that fish seem to stay stuck, and the only time I fished with siwashes, a nice wild hen had the siwash so far down in her gills there was no way she would live.. I guess that can happen with the treble hooks, but it has yet to happen to me..???
I use an extra split ring and then attach the hook.
Has anyone else had problems with the siwashes or is this just my little isolated incident?

TH - It's not just you. I will always use a trebble over a siwash. I just mentioned siwash because that's what Paranoid said he was going to use.

Re: Painting and replacing hooks on plugs?
TH-Parker,
Sounds like both of you have had better luck with trebles on plugs? I thought that if you remove the belly hook and leave or modify the tail hook that the action suffers. Is this the case?

Parker stole my thunder on this one. Reason the hook is pointed up is to lessen the possibility of snagging bottom and he ditched the swivel chain cause if the hook is able to spin there's a real good chance the fish will clamp down on it, lay the hook sideways, open it's mouth and let go of it. I learned this one on plugs, and spinners with singles when fish smacked them at the end of the swing. You want your single to be somewhat stationary.
On Warts I usually just clip the @#$% front treble off, leaving the shaft so it stays balanced and rely on the rear treble to do the job. I'm convinced the front hook can actually work against the other when a fish grabs it. If anyone else has noticed this lemme' know, mebbe' it's just me.
I uses only barbless trebles, especially on the Sandy where the wild run is still healthy, much easier to get those beautiful beasts  back in the drink without ripping their poor lil' jaws to shreds. Haven't lost a one on barbless, also gives you a better hook set.
cheers,
Mad Mikey

Re: Painting and replacing hooks on plugs?
two words: onwner stingers
I have switched all my plugs over to the owner stinger treble hooks on the back. These are the sharpest hooks on the market. Mark Anderson has been a champion for them as well. I put them on my spinners that I make as well

Re: Painting and replacing hooks on plugs?
As I posted in an earlier thread on this topic. Please do not use siwash hooks when there are natives present. Those hooks kill fish.
Try Mustad Triple Grip Trebles once the fish is hooked he aint coming off.

Painting and replacing hooks on plugs?
I am new to plugging and am experimenting with custom painting tadpollys, hot shots, and warts for steelhead. I have listened to the debate on treble vs. single hooks and have decided to try singles. I will be using a beaded swivel off of the front eye. I am unsure of how long of a swivel to use. How for back should the barb be from the back of the plug? What has worked best for you? Any tips will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Painting and replacing hooks on plugs?
I too would be interested in anyone's proven hook swap outs. I am mainly interested in changing wiggle warts over to one hook without affecting the action negativly. I am surprised how different a wiggle wart will act by just replacing a split ring thats a little too big. I would like to get away from the dual hooks levering on each other when fighting a fish.
