Default Bouy 10 opener

January 10, 2002

Selective chinook fishery opens in lower Columbia River

Action: Selective fishing for spring chinook has been opened in the lower Columbia River. All chinook with an adipose fin intact must be released from the I-5 Bridge
downstream.

Effective date: Immediately until further notice

Species affected: Spring chinook

Location: Columbia River from Buoy 10 upstream to the I-5 Bridge.

Reason for action: Crab that are molting have soft shells and are subject to higher mortality rates from handling, as well as cannibalism while trapped in pots.

Reason for action: Spring chinook have been mass-marked in the Cowlitz, Kalama, Lewis and Willamette rivers; about half of the upriver spring chinook run is marked.
Selective fishing will allow for harvest of surplus hatchery fish while minimizing impacts to wild/listed spring chinook.

Other information: All other permanent regulations in the "Fishing in Washington" pamphlet still apply. The Columbia River currently is only open downstream from the I-5
Bridge. There will likely be further changes to Columbia River spring chinook fishery regulations that will be announced after Jan. 31.

Information contact: (360) 696-6211. For latest information press *1010.

I'm confussed how the molting crabs effect the Spring Chinook opener. Are they trying to get people to chase something else? Are the monster salmon depleating our crab population?

Thanks, Ron. I had a flash there for a second of crossing the bar, but that's not for another 5 months or so. Man, I miss summer.

Let's admit it, nothin seems better right now, in the dark cold of winter than thinkin back to Buoy 10! Remember......launching in the warm, ballmie early summer morning (just a sweatshirt on)? Or how about that sun, that sun warming you as you troll along just knowing that herring is going to be slammed any minute by one of those pig silvers! Or watching 100's of boats fish w/o much conflict, nets out ,people laughing (thinking of the Cowlitz over Christmas). Yes, I am ready to put that purple diver on, my green kite, and a fresh cut plug. Oh......the sweet days of summer
