Default Hook/Corkie/Hook

Recently I bought a box of old fishing tackle at a flea market.
Inside the box was a bunch of pre-tied steelhead leaders.
They were tied with two #1 hooks about 2" to 3" apart with a small corkie in between, and a 20" leader.
Does anyone fish with a rig like this?
My next door nieghbor (who is in his late 80's) said that was a common rig way back when.
Can anyone shed some light on this method of rigging?

Mike

Mike5097 this is a very popular boat drift rig for the cowlitz & lewis, used in side drifting. We use #4 gamakatsu's with a size 12 corkie or cheater in between, but we tie it as close as we can and run a litle finger nail size roe bait on the top egg loop. This rig is nasty, so many times you have to cut thse small hooks out of the fish's mouth. Not a good idea for C & R.And your fingers get tired tieing these rigs on 55" of 8# to 10# Ande leaders.

Works nice when drifting out of a boat with eggs or sandshrimp. You can use it from the bank as well. It's a pretty common setup for sandshrimp tossers. We usually go smaller though, with #4's (for steelies), depending on the conditions.

I knew somebody would say that!
Does it follow that double hook sand shrimp rigs as illustrated in Herzog's book, mooching rigs, or anything else with a double hook setup qualifies as a "SNAGGING Device"?

That's BS ******.

Is anything you don't personally use a 'snagging device'?

Maybe you can explain what makes this setup a snagging device?

yep, know people fortunate enough to fish the
clack during the week boodogging with this set up
hooking fish in the double digits. Why such long
leaders for boondogging???? Prior to the rain blowout mind you. These folks aren't snagging. Rick is just refering to the two hook double corky no bait belly rippers from tidewater.

NEUTRON ,the long leaders for boondogging or side drifting ,give your bait a very natural sweep ,a foot or two off bottom. And ****** ,a '5 ,8# leader with #4 hooks ,fished with a loomis 1141s wouldn't make a proper snagging rig....

Come Nonook
If you ever get the Titanic off the Columbia,You might get a clue what catches fish
since you have trouble telling a Steelhead from a Salmon anyway
In order to boondog you need to have a 5-6' leader and very little weight, this keeps the presention in the zone and flowing at the right speed.......Os

The two hook setup with a oakey in the middle used to be the STANDARD drift rig years ago when I first started steelheading. Haven't used a two hook setup drifting tackle in years for steelhead, only with sand shrimp. This is not a snagging rig when applied in drift fishing.

So tell me Rick, are you a Triscuit, Ritz, or Wheat Thin??

It's OK, we know you just learned how to tell a steelhead from a salmon...........sooner or later you'll get the rest figured out.

I guess if it isn't used on the ocean or a river less than 2 miles wide, you guys have never seen it before.

What exactly do we "Wannabe"? Crackers? Clueless? Battleship drivers?

I don't care when that was caught, that is one nice fish.

The double hook/corky or cheater / hook set-up is very effective for shooting buckets on silvers when night fishing. Nothing better than fresh silver with a wad of glo in it's mouth  Of course springers are coming.......... that could be better yet! I can hardly wait .

Try not to have everybody mad at us before we get down there! They will end up surrounding us and we won't have that hockey dad to back us up!

I got turned onto fishing near the jetties, down by the town of Chinook. Talk about stress free fishing. All the room in the world and all the silvers and chinook you can handle. I have friends who own a house one block from the boat launch. You gotts experience that a couple of times. No anchors, no ropes to lose fish to.

Hope everything is well with you. I still say that fish was a W ANKER!

Most would probably say that rig has been used alot to catch bitting fish but has also snagged some fish most people use what works best for them. If people wanted to appear to be more legitimate when snagging they probably use setups like this that can be argued, but the the most obvious setup I have seen this year more than ever on the Cow and Lewis looks like double treebles with weights either up or on the bottom. I pulled one up and thought damm guys fishing halibut dont even use this size hook?

I like to belive most people release foul hooked fish. This year I encountered more forienger/immigrent non english speaking treble hook users in both wash and or. I reported a few. Some that were getting tickets I was wondering if the officers were getting real names or alias because of the language barrier. I also thought what happens in court with these Non-English speaking guys? I hope not court leincy for being twice as dumb!

I know I got off topic but this has been bothering me making me mad let too many times because where I was fishing no one spoke english or followed the rules.

So if some one fishing near me has a hook/corkie/hook and speaks a little english at least I feel I can explain the rules with out it being a waste of breath.

Yeah so a Wanabe might be convinced not to, but a Hasbeen can be convicted.

C&E,
You were right about hook minimum size. That is until January 1st when the "size hook while using bait" regulation was revoked. First barbless hooks not required now there is no minimum hook requirement when using bait.
FNF,
We'll have to hook up some time in the future. I was born and raised in Ilwaco, learned fishing by rock hopping the Jetty and fishing the Chinook River. I get my Cinook Ramp Pass Yearly. I've got a house in Seaview on west side of K Place at 30th. It's allways vacant unless I'm fishing or doing yard work. I'd love to get together with someone else that knows the area.
Got room to invite ****** and the Titanic too...

I needed to vent about about the hook set up and fisherpeople that use them.I am usually an easy going laid back type not bothered by too much. This year more than ever I encoutered individuals and groups using double hooks, double trebles and not speaking english. The Law enforcement I am sure has a tougher time with them. I have had my share of trying to share the bank with them. So seeing a guy I can talk to using a hook-corkie-hook just doesnt bother me me as much.

Just discouraged by all the abuses of laws and tackle stores to sell licenses and tackle. If these guys dont speak english how did they end up with treble hooks big enough to choke a Halibut? Drew a picture, pointed to it grunting,or sign language? I dont often voice negative critism but this one has gotten to me lately!

Fishing isnt that fun when it comes to wondering and worrying who is using what and why. I am glad I am not the fish cop.

Oh sorry flaming the ethnics that can't read this and the tackle store for selling trebles that could pull a horse off the bottom. It's all for fun.

This certainly has turned into a bit of a flame post. ******...you are...well I'll spare the ears. Here is a fish my buddy Stan got on a hook/corkie/hook rig in the mouth with both hooks fishing under a float. And yes we are from Washington.

Mods - please remove my profile. I have better things to do in real life. Thanks.

******..I 'll eat my words and agree with your original assessment. You spotted something I failed to notice at first look. A 20 INCH LEADER, probable big double hooks...You may very well have nailed this one right on the head. I saw some of your pics...you know how to fish. And I have certainly also seen the rigging setup described used for snagging. You probably don't need anything from this board or posts, nor do I. But it can be an enjoyable way to spend some time and sorry for over reacting myself...(something about the WA bashing brings out a defensive side)By the way I also have a sled, a driftboat, (Believe it or not, we in WA, also have boats)and also catch a lot of fish.

Boy did this thread ever turn south. Nine posts after inviting ****** fishing down around the mouth of the Columbia he takes his profile and runs. Hope you come back soon ******. Offer and my profile are still here.

I think it's pretty sad how those guys up North slammed ****** on this. Seems they all the sudden show up in packs or something.Notice how it was just a few hitting him, all from our "neighbors".
Why not just trade fish stories techniques and other points of interest with each other? Nope these guys are the "super" fisherman of up north. I forgot.
Crackers ????? These guys are just a buch of Keebler elves with nothing better to do than type up testosterone at night. Why not leave this junk on a different board.
Funny how none of them brought any proof of the big daddies like Mark suggested. One guy posts a minnow. WOW ! Stack a couple together you might have a pack of Kippers on a stick.
Seems the only guy up there with bigger fish is Parker. He always has proof etc... and class the biggest factor of all. Funny, he didn't hit this thread yet, and show off some of the beasts he's gotten. Those seem to be on the over 20# thread. Personally I'm still searching for that over 20 # fish, when I get'em I'll hope to have the camera along for some memories.
Hope those puppies from Wa. didn't push ****** over the edge. He's seems to be a pretty laid back guy from what I've seen.
My vote to close this topic before anyone else packs up.

Chris

Jim,

I think you're in the clear, you're posts were trying to stir in some humor. Those other guys were just being ... well they were just being themselves I guess.

Rapid Robert,

Okay, I'll bite. It just seems to me the guy specified, as he has done many times before, to this being a tidewater snagging device. Then someobne reads the word "snag" and it's gang up on ****** time. You guys are a little sensitive about the "head shot" rules there. A little embarassed that they don't make you return a fish that doesn't EAT what you're chucking ???? Weird ruled dude. I know you don't write them, but you sure get to follow them. Besides, the guy offered the olive branch more than once.
I'm not saying that snagging/keeping doesn't happen here. P.C. and Eagle Creek (formerly now in a few spots) are two notorius areas near Portalnd. But the guys in WA. are WAY more bold in their fishing ethics. Snagging is Snagging . Period. However this is not a snagging thread.
You did help first, and another time also. I too posted my success with silvers using this method. We call it shootin buckets ( N.F. Lewis). Anyway, this board is very much about helping people. Many have helped me, and I contribute what I can. Honest reports and what I'm using. I love seeing the face of someone catching steelies/ and or salmon. It is beyond words.

With that said...GO MARINERS !!!!SODO MOJO fans in P- town too !!!!!!! GO MARINERS !!!!

The Little Drummer Boy/Fisherman is also a funny man !!

How is Big Creek fishing anyways ? Eagle Creek has been on fire lately in spots. I missed out on Sunday, too much effort chasing fish on the Nestucca.
