Thumbs up LBC Report - Sat Jan 16 (pics)

Wanted to get the boat wet so I took my youngest son to LBC on Sat 1-16 for some winter kokanee action. We got a late start and arrived a the Cove Palisades ramp about 9:45 AM. We fired the boat up and motored down toward the dam. Immediately we started picking up large schools of fish at 120'.

We set out the gear just shy of the Deschutes arm and had our first fish in the boat with 10 minutes. We ended the day with two easy limits just shorlty after noon (including a double).

Hot bait - Orange apex tipped with corn, orange/pink and silver sling blade (all 10 fish came on this set up). We tried wedding rings and bugs with not even a hit.

Depth - 250' of water trolling at 120'.

Water temp - 44 degrees

All fish ranged from 10-12"

While tring to get our last fish we had a strong take down. To our surprise a nice little bull trout hit the kokanee gear. That was cool! A quick photo and back in the lake.

About 8 or 9 boats on the water. Lots of people fishing just south of the ramp.

Summitone,
I was the one that said hi to you at the ramp when you were putting in. Glad you got into them. It looks like you and your boy had a great time!

Nice work. It is great to get out and wet a line this time of year. Kinda feels like a bonus! I want to hit it again myself. With two rods it is fun to have a kokanee setup for some action and a bull trout setup for the chance at a big fish. Then you get lucky and pick up a bull on the koke gear.

My son had a wrestling tournament in the morning, but when it was over we glanced at the time and thought we can at least get a little boat ride. We got to the water around 3:00 pm. There were 4 boats trolling about 3/4 of the way across the main body from the cove ramp. We decided to run the crooked river arm and see what was up there. We ran all the way up to the river water mark and saw very little on the fish finder but we decided to go ahead and fish back out anyway. We put in a gold thomas spoon, a small rapala, a set of lake trolls with a glow green wedding ring spinner tipped with a chartruse maggot, a set of lake trolls with a green and red wedding ring and gulp maggot, a blue pirate k-16 kwickfish and a spotted blue lyman plug. Had a nice hit on the glow green wedding ring. That was my son's rod who was in the cabin playing a video-game. I grabbed the rod and started fighting the fish. It came up to the surface and started rolling and splashing everywhere. When my son got to my side I turned to hand him the rod and somewhere in picking up the rod and fighting the fish I must have flipped the anti-reverse switch so when I let go of the handle the reel spun wildly backward and by the time I caught the handle and reeled up the slack, the fish was gone. That looked like a 12-15" fat little fish, very bright but I am not sure if it was a rainbow or a bigger kokanee than we have been hearing about. 20 minutes later the other wedding ring got bit and this time my daughter was up. She landed a 10" kokanee (I was glad I didn't lose her fish, I would have still been in the doghouse). Fun little afternoon boat ride with a couple fish mixed in. Mirror flat water, surface temp in CR arm was 51 degrees. Only the occasional drips of rain every so often. We ran back to the ramp just before dark. Thanks for your report SummitOne.

I was there fishing for bulls as well, Friday thru Sunday. I probably saw a couple of you on the water. I was in a white Fish-Rite. It was a great weekend for sure. Thanks for the report and pics.

Can trolling with a Ford Fender set up and worms do any good for Kokanee in LBC??

Yes but you are better off with a wedding ring and shoepeg corn, Firecorn or Gulp maggots than a worm chasing the fender. I was running 1 oz weight and 25-35 "pulls" on the two bites in my report above.

Only one piece of corn or cover the hook?

Sometimes the number seems to make a difference, I usually start with two but will occasionally to to 1 or 3.
