Default Oregon coast fly fishing

I've been wanting to try some two hand overhead fly fishing in the salt. Any suggestions on where/when to start my learning? I don't venture to the coast very often, maybe once a year, so the closer to Portland the better. I'll be fishing an 11ft. 6/7 switch and have only a vague idea about the species and flies. Any insight is appreciated.

Talk to the folks at River City Fly Shop. When I stopped in there on the 30th to window shop they were talking about fishing off the jetties in Tillamook Bay. Sounded like a lot of fun.

I tried flycasting from the beach once. Very humbling experience !!

What seems like a long-distance double-haul cast from a riverbank doesn't seem so far when it won't get past the first breaker. You can try running out and casting before the next wave comes in, and it is still not gonna be far out there. A waist-basket to hold the running line would be a big help.

I understand there should be surf perch in range, but I never found any.

Good luck, and let us know how you do.

I believe he was specifically referring to casting into saltwater Dan, but good tip none the less.

My recommendation would be to go down to Netarts Bay and park at Happy Camp, the breakers are normally fairly mellow at the entrance from the bay to ocean and I have personally caught more pink fins than I can count on flies. I normally fish a lightly weighted comet (colors resembling a sand shrimp) casting it with a sink tip on my 9' 5 wt. But, you will have superior range and more opportunity to catch nice fish with the rod you mentioned above. Also, from time to time I have seen coho and chinook jumping just outside my casting range (I can toss all 85ft with my GL3) Best of luck to you!
