Re: human scent
I have mixed views, One day I was fishing with my brother (he smokes )We were going to see who got the most fish on herring. I used gloves. He did not; and He caught more fish that day using the exact same stuff with tobacco on his hands.

Re: human scent
I always wash my hands with LJ but very rarely wear gloves and I have not had a problem catching fish. Make sure you was you lures and plugs when you are done and before you use them too.

Re: human scent
I'm a hand and lure washer. I learned many years ago that I smell bad to fish (some say I smell bad to people, too, but I don't listen to them). I don't think it's the only thing that matters, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

Re: human scent
Fish Hawg
I ran into the same thing years ago fishing SS beach at the mouth of the Columbia. I wasn't catching zipp and this ol gent down from me was chain smoking and hammering fish. I grabbed my bag of herring and a leader and asked him to rig it up, I walked back to my pole tied the rig on and cast in, within a few minutes I had a fish on! Amazing to say the least.

Re: human scent
Kwiksilver,
I can tell you some people have scent that actually attracks strikes. My chain smoking grandpa would hook three times as many fish as the next guy in the boat rigged the same, fishing the same hours etc. Also my dad is the opposite, no matter where he goes, no matter how exactly he mimics the technique, we outfish him. So moral of the story: if you are unsure, better wash and use scents.

Re: human scent
I like to use gloves to mask the human scent primarily, but they also keep your hands from drying and cracking due to washing and baiting all day.

Re: human scent
My perception is that it really makes a difference when the fish are off or tightlipped. Then, the addition of any masking scent seems to make a huge impression. When they're on, doesn't seem to matter as much.
For salmon we use a product called X-10 for salmon and halis. Noticeable difference without!
For steel, anise does the trick.
Just this man's HO!

Re: human scent
Best way to make sure of no human scent is to make sure I never fish on your boat....!!!!

Re: human scent
I have never had a problem fishing without gloves. I have seen pixed results. I have slayed the fish when fishing with someone with gloves and they got nothing (same bait) They have slayed fish wearing gloves and my not wearing gloves. I persoanly think it is bait and presentaion in the right place at the right time. Washing spinners? I have heard people swear by that, but again...who really knows unless you are a fish.

Re: human scent
I wash my hands. I think the gas and oil smell you get form operating motors will turn the fish off more than anything.
I also use a good scent on bait/lures to cover the human scent. It has made a diff. for me and my catch rates.

Re: human scent
I wash my lures, plugs and the last 20ft. of line on my reels with Lemon Joy, and I wash my hands with LJ while the trolling motor is warming up.
I wear gloves before the herring or prawn pack is cut open, and since I'm a smoker (I know ), the LJ and clean towels stay handy on the stern tray.
I've had great catchin' days before I started doing any of the above, and I've been skunked (too many times) when I did it all.....
As said above, it probably makes the biggest difference when the feeesh aren't bein' cooperative!
And... Chris Sessions, my favorite guide, does all of the above. It can't hurt!!

Re: human scent
Don't know whether you're reffering to salmon or steelhead (I'm guessing salmon), but I'll give you what's worked for me for steelhead.
When I get to the river, before I start putting together rods, touching line, or tying on rigs, I pour some anise oil on my hands and rub it in well. I repeat this process every time I take a potty break, eat lunch, or whenever I feel like I might be putting my scent on the lures I'm using. I've never really tested against not using it, but it provides me with very good success.

Re: human scent
Kwiksilver,
A picture is worth a thousand fish! These guys are ifish.net sponsor guides, and catch a ton of fish. Do what Scott and grant do.
Here's Scott (Note the gloves).
Here's Grant (Again, note the gloves).
Here's where to find their website on ifish:

Re: human scent
I've gone both ways, and hav'nt really noticed any diff. but hav'nt done a real good test either...I do always carry a box of gloves in the boat (purple) but I really don't use them that much.
