Help me choose some flies to tie
I got a whole mess of fly tying materials from River City for Christmas, the guy helping my parents must have had something in mind when picking all the materials and i thought that the seasoned fly fisherman on ifish would be able to help me out. Being new to tying i really have no clue which flies to attempt so i'll get right to it and post the materials.
I have: Hot orange, pale pink, pink, black, and hot purple Marabou; chartreuse and purple chenille, spey mallard flank, white and purple spey hackle, purple hackle, goose biot, and chartreuse/pink ostrich plumes. As well as a plethora of different threads and a box of size 2 dai-riki hooks.
Again, any help would be great, i just want to get out on the river and catch some fish with my own flies. Thanks in advance.

Re: Help me choose some flies to tie
Looks like material for some steelhead flies, but I can't figure what patterns.
Don at River City is a good person and I'm sure if you took the materials in he will guide you towards what flies to tie or exchange what you have for some specific patterns.

Yeah, he must have had some patterns in mind. I'll head over there sometime this week.
I did something with the materials, can't say what it is.

It looks like a Popsicle to me, yes that's a real pattern. To be honest, don't sweat tying "official" patterns. Throw some stuff on the hook and get after it. IF you put it in front of a fish, it'll bite. That one you tied WILL work. I tie flies and jigs in all manner of color combos and most seem to catch fish.
Here's a thought, go to a fly shop and look at the flies, specifically the bins that are almost empty. Not a garantee, but often means they are getting bought because they work.
Good luck and have fun, very rewarding to tie your own gear and fool a fish with it.

Very good advice. The "official" patterns all started out by guys trying new stuff.

Re: Help me choose some flies to tie
I've always just tied what i thought would work, but a few patterns just to base some flies off would be nice. I'll just do some internet cruising. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Help me choose some flies to tie
I agree with Andy K. Don at River City is the nicest guy you could want to meet. Go see him, and have him explain some of his favarite patterns for steelhead to you. You definitely have some great steelhead pattern material. Its going to be a very good new year.
