I was wondering if anyone could share with me,if you have had one, what your experience was, how long you were in the hospital, up and around and back at work. Did it hurt realy bad? What type if you know. Any words of wisdom?

Re: Hip Replacement. info.
I read an in depth article in Newsweek, US News and World Report or Time magazine a few weeks ago about hip replacement surgery and the advances they've made. They gave a few case examples, and the people they talked to had nothing but good things to say, and they were surprised at how quickly they were up and around again with little or no pain. If I remember right, one guy walked 9 holes on the golf course just a couple days afterwards (didn't golf, just walked).
I have a friend in New Zealand who's having hip replacement surgery on the 23rd. I'll let you know what he has to say afterwards if you're interested.

Re: Hip Replacement. info.
Stop in for a cold adult beverage at the Ship Tavern in SW Portland. The owners name is Bill and he has had both replaced. One with a super duper Titamium model. He said it hurt like heck to have it done but he now plays 18 holes of golf 3 to 5 times a week. Nice guy and he will give you some insight.
Good Luck !

I can't help you with any information on the replacement but I can offer the prayers of our family. We will pray that every thing goes well and for your speedy recovery and all else that needs to be prayed for.

Re: Hip Replacement. info.
Yeah, I'm the guy. I go in for TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT  Thursday the 25th. I broke it 13 years ago in a "little" boating accident (thus the new boats name "Wreckless") and the screws are rubbing in the socket . The pain is driving me nuts and I can't hunt the way I used to and I'm gettin' FAT(er). EVERYONE I talked to said they are glad they did it! There will be some recovery issues but I'm doin' it!! I can keep you posted as I will have a LOT of time on my hands for about 3 weeks. (estimated recovery time). Some of that "recovery" may have to be on a local river as there are springers to hassle  !!
Don't hesitate to email me!

Re: Hip Replacement. info.
BlueWater,
In November of 2002 my dad had his right hip replaced after years of pain. I have seen my dad cry about 3 times in my life, but in the 4-5 days after the surgery, I saw him cry 5 or 6 times from the pain the surgery causes. The medical staff had him up and out of bed within the 1st 24 hours and into physical therapy and walking stairs by day 3.
OK Now the good news. By the end of the 3rd week after surgery, he was walking 3/4 of a mile 2 times a day on his treadmill. He improved steadily and is now pain free. By the end of May, he was able to start golfing again and in August he went out on the ocean and fished with me several times. He played in a golf tournament in September and started shooting skeet again too in the fall.
He has told me that he never thought he could hurt as badly as he did for the first few days after surgery. But... he can now enjoy life again without the daily pain and has even learned to walk without the limp that he has had for the past 10-15 years. Part of his recovery is a loss of about 25 lbs. and he now walks 2-3 miles a day, either inside on his treadmill or outside if the weather is nice. He turns 70 this year and told me yesterday he hasn't felt this good since he was in his 40's.
I hope this helps prepare you for the surgery and your recovery. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. SD (and his girls who love their Grandpa!)

Re: Hip Replacement. info.
Thanks again to all of you for the honest insight. I'll let you all know how it goes.
Wreckless, we both have the same problem. The screws in my repair only lasted 5 months though. When that baby catches on the edge of my socket. Holy cow pain means a new thing. Good Luck.

Re: Hip Replacement. info.
BW, Joel. I feel your pain, literally. Those screws rubbing in the socket HURT!! Sometimes so bad I see stars!!
I too, thank everyone for the insight, I can't walk a river bank or climb a hill now, so I'm doin' it!!
Gottafish...thanks.....I think, no really, I realize that I'll NEVER be able to do some things again, but I think at this point I either get it replaced or get one of those little electric scooters! 4 wheel drive of course!!
Wish me luck.......Dennis

Re: Hip Replacement. info.
Yeah you may not be able to do somethings Dennis but you will be able to walk down the dock without stopping and looking for the asprin. Thats just what you need is an electric scooter for school  . The students and staff would be really jealous.

Re: Hip Replacement. info.
Well, I did it. I'm now 6 days out from surgery and getting a bit of cabin fever. I'm getting around well on crutches, but I'm still on Percocet for pain. Staples come out in a week ( 25!!!!! ). Doc says it'll be 3 weeks or so until I can go for a boat ride!! I must be the only person in the west that hopes the springers are late , which they appear to be.
Thanks to EVERYONE who helped me with my decision , even those that tried to talk me out of it. So far so good, the pain is "almost" back to were it was before surgery, and getting better!!
Keep me posted on the "springer dance" and the smallmouth ( I had a GREAT day Mon. Mar. 19th, 7 bass between 14 and 19" MEASURED, between trolling passes for springers. )
Again, THANKS to this great group of people for your support and information.
Sitting near my computer on my fly tying/spinner building desk.
