Question Abu Garcia Models

Has anyone got a clear description of the different Abu Garcia 5000 - 5500 models? I see advertised Abu 5500 C3 models that are red, silver with black, all silver, green, and even blue. Some are advertised as 2 speed, some are high speed. A quick internet search for some sort of model/feature listing came up blank. Apparently there are books, but I didn't want to spend money just to find out if the the 5500 C3 on Ebay has the features I want.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, let's look at it from a different angle... What are the features you want?? Most all C3's that I'm aware of do have the same features mechanically. But, there can be a lot of cosmetic differences between C3's. Basically, most *newer* C3's (like in the last 10 years or so) have 3 bearings, one instant anti-reverse bearing in the side and two beaings on the spool itself.
5500C - button line release. One, some with two bearings.
5500C3 - three bearings, button line release
5600C4 - THUMBAR line release, 4 bearings
5000/5500 (no C) NO bearings, just brass bushings.
Look for the newest models that have CARBONTEX drag washers....there is no smoother drag to be had. Older models can be upgraded with them too though.

they're all functionally the same reels, apart from bearing count, gear ratio and other optional features.

"functionally"?? Well, I suppose ALL reels could be classified the same then... Bearing count makes a VERY noticeable difference in performance. "Most" of the C3 models are 5.3:1 in gearing...C's tend to be more like 4.7:1 or 5:3. A "Sprint" 5000 is 6.3:1 and most of the C4's are 6.3:1.

all of the modern reels other than the C4 and C4 winch(no longer) have a 5.3:1 ratio. the older ambassadeurs are a different ball of wax.

my bushing model '70s ambassadeurs(5500s) will outcast most bearing reels.

Sometimes you can find just what you are looking for at a ggod price at the FFO Tackle website. PM me if you need the URL. It is the factory outley for Abu-Garcia, Fenwick, Berkley and several others. Watch the price as sometimes you can find the same item for less at Bi-Mart or other store.
