Default Owner or Gammies?

Just curious what people think about this. I hear alot of talk on here about Owners being the better hook, are they? I have never used Owner, only Gammies. Am I missing out?

I actually use both. I like Gammie Siwash hooks on my spoons and spinners. Gammie makes a top shelf glo bug hook that I love. I use them with beads and tying glo bugs. I think the new Gammie jig stinger hooks look interesting and I have bought some to try on my kwikfish and magnum wigglers. As far as jigs go.....OWNER! If Owner made all of the above hooks as well, I would only fish Owners. That is my little opinion.

Owner Cutting Point without a doubt are the sharpest hooks out there. When I switched from gami's to Owners, my hook up ratio went up significantly at Bouy 10.

I use both but if I had to choose it would be Gammies all the way. I dont know why or for what reason but with owners I go through spurts of losing fish and with Gammies I dont. They are both good hooks but I like Gammies more. They are easier to sharpen as well.

I use gami siwashes, mainly because I haven't found an owner siwash, because I don't think they make them. Trebles and octopus hooks I use owners all the way, they are, cutting point especially, difficult if not impossible to sharpen, but they're just so darn sharp to start with you can't not use 'em!

Owners first. Gami second. I use both but the Owners are my "go to" hook. Gami Siwash is the best. I will buy both brands.

On cutting vs. needle point. I prefer the needle point myself. Most seem to like the cutting point. Cutting point is difficult to re-sharpen (you must but more expensive hooks). Needle is so very sharp out of the box 7 you can re-sharpen.

I tried the owner cutting points and found a couple of things I didnt like. First they keep cutting until the fish is gone, second the hook sizes are not the same as other manufacturers. A 6/0 owner is actually a 5/0 gami or mustad. I used to use mainly gamis but have ran into a problem with them as well. The nickle finish hooks only last an hour or so in the salt. the point rots off. I have also noticed in the fresh water that the quality is not what it used to be. I havent had these problems with the black chrome finish just the nickle. The other thing with the owners is the wire size is to big. The way I rig my herring the shank length, wire size and hook gap are critical. I still like the gami's but they need to fix the quality issues, other good hooks are Mustad ultra points and vmc. At least with these when you buy a 6/0 it is actually a 6/0

Owner.
I prefer to use the Cutting Points for Salmon.(Backtrolling, Backbouncing, and Bobber fishing). I use Needle points for Steelhead. (Driftfishing, Bobber fishing, ect...)

I use Owner. I, like others have noticed that the cutting points cut a bit more than I need, and switched to the needle point. My hookup to loss ratio has really increased. I don't miss nearly as many fish as I used to..

I like both but have gravitated towards the Owners. I like to use the thinner gauge Owner treble hooks for my Kwikfish and use the thicker gauge trebles for my wobblers.

I agree with Biteme......I've broken Gammis. Owners are good, but hard to sharpen. I've used all of 'em for various applications, from Bass to Tuna.
A quality VMC or Mustad and a GOOD HOOK FILE will do it all!

My 2 cents.

Why do more people not use Eagle Claw? "The ONLY American Made Fishhook Company in the World!" I have caught many ocean Salmon up to 45 lbs and never had any trouble with them.

Owner and Gams are both great hooks. The only downside to the cutting point owners is that if you have to sharpen them much, the point becomes more of a wedge. This increases the resistance of the hook during penetration. Not exactly what you want.

I may use some of the best gear available....

But, I go through alot of hooks and line ect.....

I see no reason to use super expensive hooks when already expensive hooks work fine..

I am not sure that my hook-up rates would be increaced by an owner hook that requires more force for penetration? They may hold the fish on better once hooked... However this is not a problem that I personally have encoutered... I typically hook less fish than the fisheramn around me...but my hooked to landed ratio's are quite high.... The fish I do loose that are broken off through some mishap...

just my .02 worth...

I'll second the VMC Vanadium-V7199. Plenty sharp out of the box and with just a few strokes of a well-used, fine diamond EZ Lap, SHARPER than most Gami's or Owners. Easy to sharpen when dulled on rocks as well.

The Owner cutting point Octopus hooks are too sharp in my opinion. They cut thier way right out of the fishes mouth. I lost way too many fish consistently on my owner rigs when I wasnt losing hardly any fish on the Gami rods. I do however like the Owner trebles on my plugs. I get them really cheap so I but them. If I were to pay retail I would stick with gami's. Another good option for the money are vision hooks. less than 10.00/100 not too bad.

Depends on what you are type of fishing you do. I like owners for my plugs and trolling herring except in salt water where I prefer a stainless steel hook. My hook up and fish to net ratio more then doubled on Columbia River springers when I went to owner trebles on all my kwikfish. For drift fishing or back bouncing, I prefer a hook that sharpens easier but is very strong and less brittle like a VMC.

John, take another look at a cutting point. The only sharp surface is the very tip. The other angles above the barb are there for ease of penetration, not cutting. Once the hook gets past the barb an owner is no different than other hooks except for wire diameter and gap.

I don't see the hook cuting it's self out Maybe pull out if it is hooked in in some thin skin

There was some talk about the same issue of them cuting out. Here

The cutting point hooks are the ones I had trouble with also. I use the needle point hooks for steelhead and they seem the same as Gami's for me other than hard to sharpen. I lost many springers last spring on the cutting point hooks but when I switched back to the Gami's I didnt lose very many more. I dont know the reason for it but thats what has happened everytime I have used them. I now buy Gami's for almost all my Salmon fishing and use both Gami's and Owner needle point hooks for Steelhead.

I would like to try Vision hooks if I could get my hands on some.

Jon

When I fish salt water Owner's are the way to go. They definetly hold thier POINT. In fresh water I don't thinks it makes any difference as long as the hook is sharp.
