Crazy Steelhead!!
I had something happen today that I wanted to share.
My client hooked a hot steelhead but we didn't see this coming.
He sets the hook and the fish immediately jumps once, twice, three times.
While we are oohing and aawing it's jumps a fourth time. RIGHT INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOAT!!
A 7 second fight. I have never seen anything like it.
Lucky for us it was a chrome hatchery fish because it was so green when it hit the bottom of the boat it knocked itself around quite a bit.
Anyway, anybody else seen this? Grant

Never saw a steehead do it, but have had silvers in Yaquina bay jump into the boat, without being hooked! Sure does make it easy! Do you have to tag em' if they jump in and commit suicide? Happy Fishn' Bruce

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
I had a coho do that to me at the pile you and I fished this past August. Part of a double, I netted the first chics fish, and than turned to work on the other girls fish and the darn thing swam right at the baot and jumped in. She is Native American, so I thought had something to do with it......
Thanks for the story. Got any open seats?

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
I once had a rod fold trolling herring for chinooks.
I lifted the rod nothing but slack line so I reeled as fast as I could but no matter how fast I reeled I couldnt get the slack out.
all of a sudden the fish comes cartwheeling out of the water right behind the boat, comes down bounces off the kicker motor and lands on my feet.
I never even got to feel the dang thing on the rod we laughed about it all day long. I am not sure what the odds of that are but I am guessing its pretty slim.

Saw a guy once holding out his net *preparing* to net a Chinook. No effort was required- the bugger jumped into the net.

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
Actually we had really similar happen. We were at Drano Lake two summers ago and we had a 15lb hatchery jump in the boat. Only difference is that it wasn't hooked! Kinda crazy thought i was the only one that had ever had that happen!!

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
Grant,
I was out guiding on the Nestucca just a few days ago and we had a fish in close to the boat and thought it was done so I made an attempt to reach down and unhook it and it made one more jump into the chest of my client luckily he pushed it back away from him so it wouldn't fall into the boat. That crazy steelhead almost succeeded in a head but with the client.

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
Guess they are all jumping to get at more Amerman eggs! I have seen videos of people boating on a river and the fish are jumping everywhere including into the boat.

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
I was up in BC at Stuart Island a few years back and had a chum jump in the front of the boat. It wasn't my fish. Turns out someone else had foul hooked the darn thing and it ran towards my boat and decided it wanted to park itself in my bow. I reached up there and threw it back in so the lady could keep fighting it.

Was your customer satsified with that catch? or were they looking for a little more action? You can't put anything past these NW salmonids, just when you've seen everything they jump right in your boat for you!!!!!!

I saw a springer jump into a boat at OC 10 or so years ago. The guy in the boat gave a Homer Simpson style "Whoohooo" and promptly delivered a wood shampoo.

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
I hooked a steelhead at Drano last summer, fought it for a couple of minutes and told my son to be ready to get the net, and all of a sudden, it was flopping at my feet. Only one problem, it had too many fins. Luckily it had spit the hook, and I was able to get it back in the water quickly!

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
When I was a kid we were trolling at Kozy Kove (Alsea) and I was watching some ole Codger and his wife trolling next to us. A big ole Chinook jumps right into their 12 foot car-topper while the old lady is still sleeping in the front of the boat.
The ole boy jumped right on the fish, bonked him and then sat back.
His wife never moved a muscle. My dad called over and said "Who is going to tag the fish?"

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
I've had the opposite happen.
Years ago, before the flood of '96 changed that hole, I was fishing Three Rivers Hatchery Hole in November, and caught a nice 15 or so pound chrome steelhead. This fish would have been the largest steelhead I would have taken home.
I beached the fish, as it was on it's side, and drug it about 4 feet up on the bank. I reached down to unhook the fish, and when I reached down, obviously, some slack got in the line. The fish all off a sudden went nuts!!! It flipped around my rod tip, and caused a knot of line on the tip of my pole with the first part of the mainline. It kept flipping, and going absolutley bazerk (is that a word? ). While flipping around, it was making headway back toward the water. I kept trying to kick it and grab it back up the bank, all the while my rod is still in my hand. The fish made it back to the water, so it was FISH ON again. The bummer thing, was that when it flipped, it had caused a knot somehow in the first foot or two of mainline hooked to the tip of my pole. It tried to take out line, but the knot just let this fish go bananas with only about a couple foot of line there. I tried to reef the pole and fish up the bank, and SNAP! You got it, bye bye fishy, with my leader, snap swivel, slinky, and a foot or two of mainline.
The REAL messed up part, was that a couple hours later, another dude hooked and landed that same fish, with my terminal gear sticky out of it's mouth. That fish weighed around 15 pounds.
I wish I had a fish jump to me!!!
Here fishy, fishy.

That can't be good for the tips when the fish does all the work for the guide! We call those beauties "suicide fish." I would have loved to see that happen.

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
Well yes actually.
Me and three buddies were fishing the Nushagak in AK, Rich hooks a Chinook on a wggly, it makes a big run up river, I jump in the bow and grab the video camera, the fish runs back toward the boat and leaps like Shamu right over the gunwhale and onto the floor of the boat.
The funny part was watching Gary and Rich look down into the water in unison as the line cut toward the boat, then scream and jump when they were looking straight into the open mouth with a K-16 in it comin' right at 'em.
It flopped all over the boat. We tryed to revive it, but it killed itself. 39.5lb buck.
Priceless.

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
I read an account about a year ago of a man who was badly injured while towing a waterskier. Apparently, while standing at his console, a large sturgeon jumped out of the water and hit him right in the chest with its' nose. The driver was knocked clean out of the boat and broke several ribs!Wild Stuff! I never heard if anything happened to the sturgeon.

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
Yep Paul is telling the truth, my now ex wife went down with me on the Wiley creek run, I hooked a steelhead drifting a shrimp just below wiley and handed her the rod, then the fish decides to come aboard, after flopping on the flydeck for about 5 seconds back into the water she goes and makes a mad dash for the dam, but it was not to be for her, she bit the dust when I netted her. About 15 minutes later I decided to run diver and shrimp down the tailout and bang a take down and here the fish goes again running right at the boat and in it comes I couldn't believe it. After this my ex say's I got my limit let's go now so I proceeded to drag my boat up to the ramp and load up, take her down to Pleasant Valley to get her car and sent her on her way, did I mention she was me ex?? That was her last time in the boat, but what a way to go I guess.
Tim
And yes Scotty was there to see it so I have a not so reliable witness

I did not witness it personally, but I know of a guy who had a keeper (at that time) 70" sturgeon jump into his boat while springer fishing in the Willamatte. This was probably about 20 years ago or so.

Re: Crazy Steelhead!!
two years ago i was fishing the clackamas bellow dog creek. on my way back i was crossing the creek and i hear splashesh coming from upstream. i turn around and i see a DARK broun fish (i assume steelhead) jumping 3 ft out of the water, and again, and again..... it jumped about 5-6 times getting closer to me every time. finaly it landed a few feet in front of me and i felt water splashesh on my face. i thought that was the end of the show but nooooo..... it jumped again and it was aiming at me   i had to use one of those Matrix moves to dodge the darn thing, because if i didn't move ould have had a 12 lb steelhead hit me in the head
but the fish didn't care ... it jumped about 10 more times and i never saw it again....

I hope you released him... that was my trained steelie "Bud". He is supposed to find your boat, and get secret egg info off your baits before they get eaten by all those pesky 'other' fish...
