Default What kind of bird is this?

I saw this fellow in my backyard today. It was picking something out of the grass for a while.
Note: This was in Northern California.
Thank you!

It's a Flicker. The only question is "red or yellow".

It is unanimous, it is a flicker. I can honestly say I do not think I have ever seen one before.

I took the pictures from inside my house, through the glass window. The flicker was a ways off, I zoomed as much as I could and even set the pixels higher. Then I had to crop out about %85 of the frame.

Thank you for the replies. Empire

I'd say Red Shafted Flicker. Pretty far north for a Gila Flicker.

Looks like you had a couple chances to help it over the fence, just kidding, we had one in the feeder the other day and the resident blue jay had a cow, nice shot.....Ray
