Default Can Dodge Dakota pull trailer or 5th wheel

I have a 98 Dakota with a 5.2L V8 318. I want to get a RV for it and I am getting a lot of different answers at the rv stores. Does anyone out there have a Dakota and pull a trailer or 5th wheel with it and what size and weight and kind is it? Does the weight effect it?

Look in your owners manual. It gives you towing weight limits.

Most manufacturers give pretty optimistic towing capacities for 1/2 ton trucks. Your owners manual should give you their ratings. Personally I wouldn't want to tow more than about 4000lbs with a Dakota,or any mid-size truck for that matter.

My wifes S-10 Blazer has a tow rating of 5000lbs. Theres no way I'd tow that much with with an S-10.

I'd stick with a trailer or fifth-wheel around 20-22' long and 4000lbs or less. Alot of RV manufacturers are marketing trailers as ultra-lights. They are lighter and narrower for their length than regular trailers.

Pole Bender:
I went to RV.net, and did a search for "dodge dakota" and got 205 hits. Lots of good information. You might want to peruse the posts there and maybe even talk with some of those individuals.

I/ve got a '97 Dakota with the V8 and manual tranny. I've pulled my 17' Tjet with it for 6 years. Picked up a 19' 5th wheel a couple years ago. It handles it fine, until I hit a head wind, then turns into a tough pull. Don't think I'd want to try anything bigger behind it, and make sure your brakes are in good condition on the trailer. 107,000 miles and going strong.

Follow thecamel's advice. Goto RV.net. Read and learn.

Otherwise go to a scale and weigh the truck full of fuel and your normal load (tools, passengers, etc). Then subtract the weight from the GVW. This is your REAL WORLD "payload". Now you know what kind of pin or tongue weight your looking at. Pay attention to your axle ratings too. That is the number you really don't want to exceed. The weight of your truck PLUS the weight of your trailer should not exceed the GCWR to stay within the manufacurer recommendation.

Also remember that most weight numbers thrown around are dry weights, not wet. When it comes to RV's, the CONSUMER needs to be educated because some of the sales people only care about the sale. It is amazing how much they don't know or care. Been there, done that! When looking for a camper I would drive the wifes explorer and I would just say I have a Ford Superduty for a rig. They always took me to the biggest campers that would put any f250 2 to 3k lbs over. Buyer beware!

my 2 cents.......

I pull a 19' Northriver Sportster with my 94 Dakota V6 5 speed. I did however put a 3.9 ring & pinion set in the rear end. Glad I got the 5 speed, 94 was a bad year for Automatics in the Dakota.

Everywhere from Astoria to The Dalles and it works great!

I worked with a guy that had a V8 Dakota built with a 3.9 differential specifically for pulling a 5th wheel trailer, and he was very happy with it.

Pole, Remember its not just towing the weight its also trying to stop! Not as big a deal if you have trailer brakes. But I have seen people try to stop fast with smaller rigs(smaller brakes) only to find there rear ends passing them
