Digital camera for the outdoors
I recently purchased the Minolta XT...nice camera, small easy to carry and you can get the waterproof case for it...Great for diving and that is one of my hobbies so the the purchase was easy for... NOW,,, I have found a new camera...Pentax OPTIO WR. This camera is waterproof, not for diving, but to the extent of IPX7 which is the same as GPSs. So you can leave this one out in the weather, rain, and even submerge it to a limited extent. No case required... it is compact and uses other battery options if you get caught without a charger..
The later is an issue I just ran into...I have my minolta,, I am travling on biz right now and I am in Amsterdam... no charger and no battery options other than the proprietary built in one. The Pentax can take AAs as a temp solution.
Oh, and I saw it for as low as 214, for 3.2Meg pixel, on the web.

Re: Digital camera for the outdoors
I bought the minolta but now I want to sell it and get the Pentax Optio WR33. I think it would be a great outdoor camera since it is waterproof like a gps. I have seen it only in some camera shops in Europe but the Euro is 125-130 and I won't blow the extra 30%. I did a search on CNET to find the 214 price, so I will probably mail order it unless I can find a decent price in town.
ha ha,, Amsterdam,, it isn't anything like you have heard about.....IT'S worse. Reminds me of the Rush 2112 album... "...smoke rings filled the air". You get a whiff of pot smoke at every turn, and it doesn't end there.
I hit the ground at 6:00am on Sunday, flew in from Taiwan via lay over in Singapore. Stopping there for 5 hours, ran into town and had Pepper Srilanka Crab, biggest claws on a crab you every saw. Downed some Tiger Beers in the open air (all of 95 degrees and 90 % humidity)
Walked the streets of Amsterdam.... Ended up at the Heiniken Brewery...Uh oh,, we stayed a while as everybody kept giving us free drink slips.
Did some Museums...ok museum.. I skipped the Rembrant, Madam Trausad's, Vangoph, stood outside and got pictures though,, but did the Tortue Museum. Okay, so we weren't in a sight seeing mood and I didn't have the mental ability to process history from having just flown 14 hours. I did see a kid get attacke by pidgeons though...I will post pics later.
After a day in town we headed back out the hotel where I had to work 2 full days and come home...

Re: Digital camera for the outdoors
Hey Gus!
I just got home yesterday from a week in Singapore and a week in Vietnam. I know what you mean by the size of the pinchers on those crabs! That Pepper Crab is great but, have you tried the Chili Crab? Wish I could find a recipe! Next time you are there try Jumbo's Seafood. Chili Crab and Tiger Beer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Digital camera for the outdoors
Ex-tex...yep , chili crab is great too! I have been to spore several times, and Jumbo's Seafood is the only place to go. I did hit Lucky View's next door once, but that was my first visit. I got to say I wish I did get the chili crab this time, I almost got two, one of each, and the Tiger beer is cold and flowing fast!
Myles, Thanks, I have seen the recipe and I thought it was here on ifish. Just add some cold tiger

Re: Digital camera for the outdoors
How did we get from Digital Cameras to Crabs, felt like I was back in a Bar in the Phillipines, the strech was kind of far. I have a little Fuji takes a couple double A's easy to use and not very expensive so if you lose it, like I did my Poliroid your not out much, as far as water proof that would be a killer deal, glad for the posts and maybe they will get them cheaper and better as we go along, but remember doesn't matter what you have if you don't use it........Ray
