Haiti
How's the fishing in Haiti ? Anyone ever fish there ?
CBS/AP) Fifty combat-ready U.S. Marines
were on their way to Haiti's capital Monday
to secure the U.S. Embassy and its staff,
Western diplomats aid on condition of
anonymity.

Re: Haiti
Haiti is a mess. It's like one big gang war over there. Both sides are nothing but drug dealing thugs. That's what this is all about. They are battling for control of the drug profits. And the majority of the population suffers because of the criminal control of the country. Aristide is another Manuel Noriega and the rebels want to take the kingpin down and cash in on all the loot.
That 50 man US force that arrived to protect the embassy is packing quite a punch. The best of the best. They could probably take over the country with a little air support. Those rebels are all high on cocaine and marijuana. When they make it to Port-Au-Prince, the capital. I doubt that they will go anywhere near the American Embassy.
The French have mentioned interest to back a peacekeeping force. I say send a fleet of C-130's to pick them up and drop them off into that mess. Whatever it takes to makes sure that the US doesn't get too involved in this mess.
Unfortunately, the proximity of Haiti may make some form of intervention neccessary. And we all know that we can't depend on the French. But I think any intervention will have the French leading the way. Haiti is a former French colony and one can just imagine them relishing the thought of being involved in a military operation just a few hundred miles from the US coast.
I don't care if they gloat. Just as long as it is thier boots on the ground. Someones going to end up in Haiti. It is inevitable.

Re: Haiti
The Haitaians reaped and pillaged their country of its natural resources a long time ago. I spent some time doing marine research in the Dominican Republic several years back, and when you fly in you can clearly see the border between the D.R. and Haiti, because there are no trees in Haiti. Its pretty remarkable. The Dominicans had pretty much harvested all of the conch shallower than 100 feet by the time I got there, and there weren't much edible reef fish left either. I can only imagine whats left in Haiti. Probably not much.

Better yet why not 5000. The more manpower they have the safer they will be. CT, We have had our military "Visit" Haiti several times, oil or not.

Re: Haiti
Someone has got to do something over there and soon. There are 20,000 Americans over there amongst the thugs and looters.

Re: Haiti
Rebels occupied the national police headquarters but kept away from the U.S. guarded presidential palace after their convoy entered the capital Monday to the cheers of thousands celebrating the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
The French version of BYOB:
U.S. Marines set up a security perimeter at the airport, kneeling in the grass as about 80 French Marines arrived in C-160 transport planes. The French Marines' supplies included crates of bottled Evian water.
