Record Returns at Salem Hatchery
February 22, 2004; Salem Department of Fish and Beer; For Immediate Release:
Runs continue their 13th year of increase at the Happybrew Hatchery, in Salem. Our broodstock program has successfully spawned yet again. While most other hatcheries produce on average 2.2 smolts released over the life of the hatchery, projected smolt releases at the Happybrew facility will increase from 5 to 6 sometime in October. Our new, larger facility may need further upgrades in order to accomodate increasing runs.
Also, from CNN Business News:
Wall Street has responded to the good news with increased stock prices for GI Joe's and Sportsman's Warehouse as sales of fishing gear are expected to increase. Boat manufacturers are hoping for a piece of the action as well, but no increase in sales in that sector are expected in the short term. Auto manufacturers are being urged by the Salem Department of Fish and Beer to develop a minivan with greater capacity.

Re: Record Returns at Salem Hatchery
Actually it was very well written and YES, funny, now that I get the jist of it.
More than likely it's because I'm 35, single, no kids, no desire to, so naturally I was thinkin' about fish and beer ya' know??
PS Congrats....

Re: Record Returns at Salem Hatchery
With increasing returns like that, we figure you better start spending less time at the hatchery.
Skein -
PS. Did I really say that? Hope the mods don't catch it.

Re: Record Returns at Salem Hatchery
Yes, we know what causes it. We've banned gillnets on the river. Actually, our run timing is a bit off. Hatching in October is a bit of a problem. It prevents fishing fall chinook, as I'm not going anywhere the month before or the month after, so from September to November, I'm out of the ballgame. Next time we need to plan it for August. Not as much fishing in August.
