Default Need a new fish whacker

It's time for a new fish whacker. I've heard about some that deliver a stunning blow with very little effort.

Help?

I've done this for myself and twice for my dad (one ended up falling in the water).
Find an old axe handle (shovel, hammer, etc.).
Cut off the handle to the desired length.
Bore out the thickest end with an oversized drill bit.
Put two or three screws in the side of the handle so they enter the bored out section.
Slowly fill with hot lead.
Dip in Plasti-dip to seal up end.
Tip. The wider and shallwer the hole, the more the weight is distributed to the end and more 'umpf' it has, but many times the piece of wood you start with will determine the size of the core.

Something about plastic and hot molten lead makes me think you're in for a challenge.

Yeah hot lead and plastic,I'm not too sure about. You could fill 3/4 the way with shot and cap the ends, then you get the dead blow affect/effect.

Chuck Norris doesn't need a club. He looks the fish in the eye and it's totally stunned and bleeds out on it's own, without even cutting it.

If you know anyone with a good lathe talk to them. I've been making fish bats for my friends for the last two years and everyone cherishes them like their first born. I have found different qualities in different woods. Walnut is very beautiful and hard but it is incredibly lite. Apple and cherry are not quite as pretty but they are hard and HEAVY. No lead needed. Anyway, there is a great deal of satisfaction in making your own. Give it a shot.

I've got some heavy wall brass pipe cut-offs from Von Duprin panic hardware installs.
They work great for bonkers....1" OD so a mountain bike grip fits perfectly on one end.
Some 1/4" shock cord makes a good wrist loop.
When you bean a Chinook square on the mind, it makes a nice ring .

Oh My Dear lord - they've gone and done it again.... The old whackers were just that... Whackers! Looks like the new ones have a SCLAE built into them! Genius's down there I tell ya!

I'm sure they have some of the other older style still available though as well... think they were $35.

Still spendy, but WELL, WELL worth it when your one & done on the smack!

Good point though! We spend ENOUGH as it is on these pesky fish! ( love every minute of it though! )

( P.S.- did also notice that all the Accessories are 25% off though too! )

Take a hack-saw to an old aluminum baseball bat. Cut it right about where the rubber grip ends and sand smooth. Whack them with the butt of the bat, works great and is free or near free.

I would cut a splitting axe handle off. It worked pretty good. They were tough to make. You had to use up it's first life! Then it was ready for fishing.

go to the Goodwill or your favorite tavern.
Pick up a cheap or busted pool cue and cut the handle down to your desired length.
The handle is already weighted and rain water never seemed to effect mine iin the past 20 years laying on the transom.

In the boat I use a madrona fish whacker a friend built. Anything with a little whack to it will work. Doesn't take a lot.

All great ideas here

First time out in the new boat this summer on the columbia catching some summer steel. Didn't put all the gear in the new boat yet. So of course, no fish whaker. Ended up using the fire extinguisher and got a good laugh from the surrounding boats. Works just fine, and you have to have one anyways.

Something about waving a sharp knife around a fish that is flopping in the net or boat that just does not set right with me. I like to subdue them a little first, then on with the bleeding.

Check out a local Truck Stop. Last year I picked up a tire wacker which is a wooden baton made out of Hickory and the end is filled with lead. I guess that Truckers use these to smack their big tires to determine if they are properly inflated. It cost $6.00 and works great.

I am using a dead blow hammer. Comes in flourescent orange so its easy to see, all plastic=so it doesn't rust. You can get them cheap at harbor freight tools. I would get a big one, helps them sleep better.

I went to a local archery shop where they make custom long bows. I was given a piece of hardwood called bubinga wood. It is possibly the hardest wood I have ever seen, looks cool too!. The price was right (free) and it makes a great conversation piece on the boat.

Ask Mr. Johnson what he is using. It looks like a small bat but it has some special powers based on the dance he did when he swung on the beautiful 28lb hen we had just boated, missed and hit his instep. It looked a little like

I cut a fir branch each year and put notches for each fish I thump. Sometimes one of my boy's will custimze it. Each row represents a diffrent species. At the end of the year I know what I killed in the boat. The camera documents the natural fish and the thumpers. I date the club and hang it in my shop.

We hit fish just once. Dont need much of a thump to stun them. Cut the gilles and let them bleed.

My brother in law picked up one at a flea market and asked me if I knew what it was. I said "a fish whacker." He laughed and said, "no, a tire thumper," but liked the idea of it being a fish whacker, so he bought it for 50 cents.

Fishalot
It wasnt a problem for the 24# springer. I dont wave knives around. Grab the fish by the tail.

isn't that the truth ... if you had friends on board like I did, about a week later you get a package in the mail with one of these inside:

On the boat I have an old axe handle.

On the bank I grab the nearest cobble.

Why spend good money on a proprietary fish whacker when the generic ones are laying around all over the place for free?
