Default Trolling Gear Tackle Box Recommendations

Hey all - I want to get my father-in-law a new tackle box for Christmas. Probably 75% of his gear is trolling gear (ford fenders, gang trolls, wedding rings, apex, etc etc). The other 25% is misc spin-cast tackle.

I'm looking for recommendations on the best box for him to use. What is the best way to store the spoons? What is the best way to store the lures with the long leaders? He currently uses small zip-lock bags for each lure and they just pile up in the bottom of his box and the leader often gets tangled in the bag.

How do you all store your trolling gear? What would be a good box to pick up for him?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

For lures/spinners with leaders these are the best thing I have found..They are from Cabelas. Easy to use and keep from getting tangled.

thanks fishbig - those look pretty good. How do you secure the tag end of the leader to keep it from unwinding off the spool?

The tag end goes first in a slot in the plastic then wind the leader around the insert then hook the hook. They work very well and keep things organized and dont hurt the line. They are great for spinner rigs and small lures. I have 8 boxes of them all full of spinners and lures. I was skeptical at first because I have tried about everything and found nothing I like untill these. I had to go back and buy more. If you double click on the pic it will take you to Cabelas site and give more detail

My trolling box has 4 slide in boxes behind a door in the front and then a fairly big open part on top. I cut a noodle (foam kids pool toy) so that it will "stick" in the lid. My boxes will hold 3-4 cut noodle pieces in their lids. I then take the noodles and make circumferential marks about 3/4 to 1 inch apart and then use a knife make a slot in the foam where I marked them. My slots are about 3/8" deep. Then I can take my spinners and other lures on leaders and stick the hooks in the foam, wrap the leaders and secure the tag in the slots that I cut...maybe a picture would help, but that is the best written description I can give. The lower boxes hold all my spoons, wigglers stick baits and jigs, and my dodgers and scents go in the top where there is space under the noodles when it is closed.

Cabela's has some great dodger bags that work for small gang trolls too. It's a fold up bag with a bunch of seperate compartments that have clear covers and close with Velcro. As far as leaders I just coil up the line on two fingers and use wire ties to secure. For lure storage I use plastic Plano box's. The box's can then be kept in a large tackle bag...Cabela's has some nice ones.

My suggestion for a good box for trolling would be a Plano 758. I know it is quite large but if he is in a boat there should be room for it. The top compartment has a large open area to store trolling rigs. I put mine individually in quart size Zipper top baggies, and that way they are protected a little form getting tangled up. I also like the 4 drawers, with divider compartments, to put all my lures and stuff to keep from getting all hooked together. For a smaller box, the 737 has 3 drawers and lots of little compartments to keep stuff right at hand, and easy to see.
