Default DSL speed increases in Portland

Qwest just increased my DSL speed from 640k/256k to 1.5m/896k. And the price stays the same. I have to order the upgrade and I would not have known about it had my ISP not sent me an e-mail with the details.

I guess they need to turn up the speed to keep up with cable. The funny thing is, DSL is capable of 8 megs over standard phone lines.

It ticks me off that Qwest has been holding out on the bandwidth for so long. They probably thought that they would roll out bandwidth incrementaly, charging for the upgrades along the way. It looks like the cable speeds ended that. Now they are giving away bandwidth for free just to keep up.

It's a resource they've had all along but have been stingy with in hopes of milking the cash cow. Now they're willing to give it away to keep customers happy. But no one is lowering the entry cost to the broadband market. The cheapest deal going right now is $30 through Verizon and that's still not cheap enough for me. I'd be happy with 364k/128k at $20 but no one is offering it. For $10 a month I'm getting by on 56k just fine.

Qwest has a 256/256 plan that is $15. That does not include the ISP.
