Yeah, a straight up replacement isn't that tough. There's a place down off of Hawthorne that specializes in helping do-it-yourself types, like me.

Re: New furnace ?
There is a man that works with N.W. Natural gas that works with do it your self. I used him.
He provided a Furnace at wholesale and came to my house with it. He charges $350.00 to measure the Sheet metal and give you instructions on how to install it. The sheet metal shop he
recommended only charged my $75.00 to make the pieces I needed. I installed the funace myself for less then $1000.00. Call N.W. Natural and ask for him.
You need a permit and a inspector. All they do is check the Gas line for leaks.
It's a piece of cake.
The most difficult part of the job is measuring the Sheet metal. If you get that part Correct the rest
is easy.
Go for it.

Re: New furnace ?
MD,
When my wife and I bought our house, it had a HUGE oil furnace in it. We called NW Natural about converting, and they mentioned that they have on their web site a listing of contractors who they recommend. They later told me that they recommend them because they install a minimum number of units each quarter to qualify for that recommendation. So its like buying a car...let them know you are getting competing bids from others on "the list" (i can send a link if you want it...but its on their site). They will go back and forth getting their price lower and lower. I cant remember what ours cost...but it was something to the effect of 3 grand (maybe less...I'd have to look) to remove the old unit and install the gas furnace. It may have even been closer to 2 for all I know...I have the receipt at home.
Haggle and haggle...use one bid against another...and let them know you're doing it. Its fun, and you save money.
Good luck!

Re: New furnace ?
Thanks Everyone, Hey Cool Texan That,s a great idea, Reminds me of when AT&T and MCI used to battle. After a couple tries you end up going from $20.00 to $100.00 real quick.

Re: New furnace ?
Let the buyer beware.
I used one of Northwest Natural Gas recommendations and had nothing but problems (to say the least). I did file complaints, and I don't know if that company is still on their list, but all I can say is check references!

Re: New furnace ?
Brad Stapels is a furnace guy and a guide. People that I know have used Brad and are very pleased. I see his guide service advertised in the Sandy N.W. steelheaders news letter. Maybe someone has Brads phone number and can post it or email me and I'll give you his email addy.
Stay warm...Pat

Re: New furnace ?
Thanks for the info guys, Clawson is coming over monday to give me a bid and I plan on going in and talking with the DIY guys , I am pretty mechanicly inclined and it sounds like a great deal , lots of savings. My old heater still runs and keeps us from freezing but it is definately on it's last leg.
