Its cold outside... so stay in and build rods :) pics
Well it was cold the last couple of days, and I'm done with school for the term, so its time to build a couple of Christmas presents.
The first is a Oregon rod. Lamiglass IFW782L 4-10lb. Metallic Green and Yellow thread. I turned the grip, inlayed dark cork with the light. It turned out really nice.
He is a devoted ducks fan, and after the civil war game I think he will be really excited to see it.
The second is for my girlfriend. Its a pink Mudhole blank IS601L 6-10lb. Metallic blue with silver and white trim. Its actually a cool rod. I had my doubts, but it should fish good. It'll be sweet to see a steelie on the end of it

Now on to my Rainshadow Steelie rod

Time well spent! I like the cork work -- I'm going to have to try that on my next project.

I've been busy on a project that isn't a fishing rod, but I'm using a tiger wrap on it. I also have four rods in various stages. One Seeker 2x4, 2 Rainshadow RDR86mh, and one Rainshadow RDR7L.
Here is a pic of one of the 17" tiger wraps

Have a vintage Harnell 638 on the wrapper. Handle, reel seat and fore grip installed last night. Under wraps on the schedule for this evening.
Pics to follow.......

StickFish That is Like WOW nice. Does that do that from the way you lay the thread out,
or is that the way the thread come's ??.
Or is that something One must learn to do..With the thread.

It is something that one needs to learn how to do. It really isn't very hard to do to achieve some really cool results. It basically uses two layers of thread, wrapped in two different directions. The first layer uses two high contrast colors - I use black and White NCP size A. Than you burnish the wrap to disrupt the ordinary pattern - sort of make it wavy. Than apply several heavy layers of finish, I use one light build and two high build. Next you wrap in the opposite direction with two more threads, one the color you want the wrap to be and another that is sacrificial and you will pull out. In this case I used White and Blue HT Electra Metallic. I put together a how to on this technique a while back that has more detail.

Almost done with a Lamigalss XSH1262ML Steelhead spinning rod.
First try at marbeling. Experimenting on a scrap blank before I do marbeling as the trim for the butt section.

Hmm....
I am starting a couple koke rods for myself next week. I Was gonna do some marbling and an epoxy ramp but I'm thinking maybe tiger wrapping over the ramp. Would tiger wrapping a ramp present any formidable challenges?

How steep is your ramp - it might be difficult to burnish the base layer because of the varying diameter of each ring. Also you have to wrap in both directions, don't know about you but I hate wrapping down hill.
What the heck give it a try and see what happens.
Another option would be to use a clemens wrap. Take a spool of thread and color it with sharpie pen (like write a word on the thread).
Marbling would be real cool also - I need to start messing with that myself.

Not sure how steep it might be yet. Just got the blanks the other day and have been chasing winter steelhead since Saturday so I havent even thought about it for a few days. You are right...wrapping downhill is a recipe for frustration!
So about the Clemens wrap. How deep does the sharpie ink soak into it? Do you have to keep re-marking the spool every so often?

Yep, you need to keep re-marking it. I built a halibut rod for Puffin and wrote his moniker on the thread and other markings and had to re-mark every now and then. I was trying to duplicate the brown mottled color of a Halibut - the white underside was easy (white underwrap) but the clemens wrap was cool - did exactly what I wanted it to do.
Here is a pic of that rod, on the left is the tiger wrap and then the guide wrap with the clemens wrap

Re: Its cold outside... so stay in and build rods :) pics
Not trying to take anything away from Stickfish's tutorial but the RodMaker magazine articles written by Scott Throop & Bill Colby are
available free now in the Library section of the www.rodbuilding.org forum.
Some other guys like Doc Ski & Jim Rippe have been doing some expanding on that wrap type too like using several colors in the base wrap and wrapping 3 or more threads on the top wrap with mutiple sacraficial threads to get some interesting effects. I have a couple of their tutorials on my website. www.rodbuildingtutorials.com
Before one tries the multi-color multi-sacraficial technique I highly recommend you read the articles by Scott & Bill & Stickfish and get a clear understanding of the hows & whys first. It will save you from some frustration & headache.

Ray, good to hear that Scott and Bills' articles are posted for all to see without a subscription. It was the only reason I did mine cause folks here started asking how do you do that.

Re: Its cold outside... so stay in and build rods :) pics
I just wrote the customers moniker on the spool " Puffin" as I worked through the thread I would re-write it. It turned out real good.
On the burnishing - I usually go one area to the right, the next to the left, sometime I go 1/2 right 1/2 left. The point is to disturb the normal spiral of the thread.

Re: Its cold outside... so stay in and build rods :) pics
I have tried and tried and tried to figure out tiger wraps. I could never figure out tension and burnishing, but I plan on plugging away until I get it. That sure is a pretty wrap, Thanks for all the incire you guys offer up to us newbies.
