Default What to do on Lana\'i

Hey, I'm headed out to Maui over spring break with the family (wife, 15 yr. boy, 13 yr. girl). We have been there twice before and want to try something different and I woudl like to visit Lana'i. Can anyone who has been there give me a few tips/suggestions? We love to snorkel and land explore (jeep/hike). There are several options: boat over on a ferry and walk around or rent a jeep, take a zodiac tour around the island, etc. Anyway, if you've been there don't that, let me know what you think. The other option is to do another Molokini snorkel trip but we've done that before.

Oh yeah, one other question, is there any cheap way to spend the night in Hana? My son and I have an extra day over there and thought we might do this on the last two days (we don't leave until 4:00 PM back to PDX)as the wife woudl get car sick I'm sure.

Thanks,
Biederboat

Aw man...I can smell the air just thinking about it.

Something I've always wanted to do is camp North of Hana. If you've never driven the loop, you've missed a very, very uninhabited part of Maui. The roads weren't nearly as bad as most literature states. Pretty much depends on if they've had heavy rains recently. We went in March, and drove a 2000 convertible Camaro all the way around. Disclaimer...If you break something out there, your rental insurance won't touch it as it's forbidden territory. It's really no different than driving around the coast range mountains.

Nonetheless...an overnighter in this area is something I'd love to do.

Its been many many years, but I remember it very well..

We spent an entire day on a sailboat that took us out to a fish/game preserve that is an old volcano, the snorkeling was AWESOME. I cant seem to remember the name of the preserve, but it is visible from the shore (barely). I just google'd it, and I believe we went on Gemini Charters...It is out of Lahaina, which is well worth the time in exploring there as well.

We also did a para-sail trip out of Lahaina as well, and that is a blast..

We had a great time surfing/swimming/body/boogie boarding on Mckenna Beach (so well my buddy named his daughter after the beach!)Beautiful beach with some good waves to play on..Just dont go over the rocky point at the far end...unless you want an eyeful of skin!)

The other thing we did was a traditional Luau, man that was some good eats!

Enjoy the time over there!

We will be going back in may. We stay with friends in Napili. Have you tried SCUBA? You can get guest training which amounts to about 45 minutes of how the equipment works, hand signals and emergency operations. You usually stay in 20 - 30' of water, usually at the south end of kannapalli beach near the outrigger canoes. Do this early in your stay and sometimes your guide will allow you to go along with his other groups, and you just pay a cut rate under the table provided that you don't need constant attention. I think the last time we went it cost us about $45 initally, and then about $20 each for our under the table trips. A nice place to eat: The Plate Lunch at the north end of Lahiana right on the beach, not a very big place, but definetly good food.
