Default Saltwater fly fishing

Would freshwater fly gear stand upto saltwater use if it is rinsed well with fresh water afterwards, I always close the drag and brakes and put the rods etc into the shower. I have a 14ft spey and I was thinking about standing in the salt in Hawaii and whipping those wave!

I asked that question at Loomis a couple years ago about a couple of their rods. I was told that their "higher end" rods had the same hardware (guides and reel seats) as their salt water rods and could therefore handle the salt. I was specifically asking about the native run rods.

I guess it would depend on the manufacturer and the hardware that is on a specific rod.

Reels are another matter. All the reels I have used in the salt are saltwater "safe" according to the manufacturer (Ross and Abel).

Taking care of the gear after use would be important even if the gear is manufactred for salt water use. I always rinse and even soak my reels after saltwater use.

as long as you rinse all of your gear thoroughly after every use, you should be fine. I have an old medalist that I've used in the salt periodically over the years and has absolutely no corrosion because I rinse it thoroughly after every time I use it. Just make sure you don't use anything with magnesium period.

I fish salt for Bones a lot. At the end of every day I simply put my rod and reel in a bucket of fresh water, they are good for the next day. When I get home I strip the line off, wipe them down in fresh water, rinse my reels in fresh water and air blow them out. I coil and hand my fly lines to dry, the store, ready for the next trip. T
