Default Fly Fishing Combo or Setup less than $100

I've got $100 bucks so far, I've been given all kinds of stuff from a homeowner (float tube, Waders, etc...) So now I have to get into fly fishing. I've gone a couple times, and loved it.

I need a set up for less than 100 bucks. What kind of rod, reel, line all that stuff.

Any Ideas?

Thanks
Jake

Not really.... The lowest price entry level rod that I would buy is a 9' 5 wt Lamniglass that BiMart carries for around $60.00. You might catch it on sale for $50.00. You need to spend $45.00 to $60.00 on a reel (there are a lot of entry level reels in that range) and another $45.00- $50.00 on line and backing.

You should be fishing for less then $180.00. Then, if you decide this is your sport, you will use it for a couple of years and upgrade. You might find something on the "fly gear for trade" thread that could save you some money.

Good luck.

I would say invest in research, learn the brands and sizes, and then keep an eye on Craigs list. $100 will take care of it used, but new would be a stretch. That said, I have found my $20 new #6 okuma quite serviceable, but I do not know what I am missing having not tried anything else. As a product designer going on 20 years of experience, Okuma is one of my top 10 manufactures in any category. excellent value offerings.

I have to disagree with Newbs, if you're just fishing for trout, don't get an expensive reel, it's just a storage unit for line. Spend the money on a good rod.

For a beginner I'd say get an okuma sierra reel, cheap 5wt WFF line (can be found on ebay), and a good rod. When I look for a rod, the first thing I look for is the lifetime warantee. If it has that, it's probably good to go. Look at brands like St. Croix, Redington, oh and look at albrightflyfish.com right now, good rods for CHEAP!!

What ??? Someone disagrees with me??? What is this world coming to???

Actually I think you make a good point Luke (though my pride is bruised a little ). You can buy a cheaper reel and get by but if you hook a monster it's nice to have something with a good drag. Good point on the warranty as well. I forgot about Albright. They have some good stuff. I use one of their reels for steelhead. It works fine and their prices are certainly attractive.

Another option I forgot to mention is Griggs. They make a good utility priced rod with lifetime warranty. Watch for the warehouse sale... you can get some real good prices.

Thanks for keeping me honest Luke !!!

Maybe check out some of Cabela's offerings? I've read on here that some like the Three Forks rods. There's combo's for under that price. There's a five weight with a Prestige Reel (a line holder) with line for $79.00. As an absolute beginner myself I have the prestige reel on my TFO five weight and it works fine for trout. Never caught anything big enough to use the drag though....

Folks on here really know their stuff and I read what they write very carefully. Learned a lot that way.

I would like to add Cortland to the potential rod list with warranty. I received a discontinued fiberglass 6 weight Cortland rod as a gift, and promptly chucked the skinny quarter of it past the fly into a river. gone. I called them to try to buy a tip, and told them the above. They said send it in with $20. 2 weeks later, I received a NEW entry level carbon fiber 6 weight. It broke after a coulpe months while I was casting. I think it was a problem with the blank (honest). I sent it in with $20. 2 weeks later I received a carbon fiber 6 weight one level up on the food chain. Cant beat that.
