Default Check your kids\' room...

This isn't fishing related but I wanted to make sure everyone sees it. I almost lost one of my kids this weekend to a stupid thing. Our boys (6yrs, 7yrs) have bunk beds that are over nexto the window. The beds are not in front of the window, but right next to it. It seems they were taking turns jumping off off the top bunk, when my 6 yr old thought it would be a good idea to put the draw string for the blinds around his neck and jump off. Thank God he doesn't yet know how to tie a knot, at least not a good one. The draw string slipped off as he jumped, leaving a big rope burn halfway around his neck. He was SOOO lucky it slipped off like that! I don't know why we never heard all the noise from them jumping. We were just a couple rooms away in the kitchen. I also don't know why we put the beds right next to that cord. I geuss it never occured to me that they would mess with it. When they were younger of course we put all those kind of things up away from them, but I geuss we thought they were old enough now that we didn't need to worry abouot it any more. WRONG!! I just wanted to share this with everyone with kids and encourage you to look around your house ONE MORE TIME for things that might take your kids from you.

Neither of our kid's beds are anywhere near their windows and they are 8 and 11. The blinds are just one issue and you should always make sure the cords are not tied at the ends. If they are then cut them. In our case the blind pullers separate. Falling out of a 2nd story window is the other issue (in my case). Even if my kids don't jump on their beds there will inevitably come the day when someone visiting might so it's not worth thinking twice about.

While we're at it, the terrible tragedy that happend to that 11 year old girl this last week in FL should reinforce that kids shouldn't be walking home alone...ever. Mine don't even walk 3 houses down without being watched and we live in a pretty safe neighborhood.

Good safety post Kook.

We have push pins in the wall to hang the cord out of the way and out of reach.
