Default springers at 10

Why is it that no one fishes for springers down by buoy 10? It's open from there all the way to I-5. Any one, Any one?

If I had a boat, I'd be by Kalama right now.

I've wondered this as well. There was a thread not to long on this and the only reason I can recall is the weather. What I don't understand is the charter boats from Ilwaco move up and fish the Cathlamette area. I would think larger boats like that would be able to weather the spring weather at B10. Gotta be more to it.

Its my understanding that its just too dangerous. The river flows are at peak and when you add the tide and weather it not a safe fish in early spring . id. p.

In the fall, the salmon use the B10 area as an active feeding ground. IMHO they hold up a little longer. That time of year the Columbia runs very warm. I do know that some fish come in and out of the river with the tides looking for the cooler ocean water.

This time of year the river is much cooler and the springers are just geared different. They are on the move much more. They are almost like race cars cutting corners and getting up the river as fast as they can.

Hooker's theory is the one that I have heard. Fall Chinooks hold at 10 while getting used to the warm fresh water. Springers don't have the warm water to deal with, plus they are better equipped to deal with fresh water (since they must spend several months in it prior to spawning in early fall).

Something else to ponder is trying to find fish in a 4 mile wide river vs a 1/4 mi wide river. Stands to reason they will be more concentrated in a narrower area. Most of the effort down here doesn't seem to start until the river starts to neck down up near Aldrich Point.

Cheers, Jim
