Default John Day for springers.Secret honey hole.

Last Spring my brother and some friends started fishing below John Day Dam, and had some real good days. My brother called it his secret honey hole. I know it is not a secret and Im pretty sure its not his. What can you all tell me about that stretch. How many of you fish it ? What method do you use ? When do you start fishing it ? Wiggle warts? Kwikfish? cut plug? Thanks for any help. id. painter.

I have heard Mag Warts in the pink spectrum. I have never fished that area for Springers but the guy at the gas station in that little town there says they slay them. I might try it this year. I know people catch a ton of steelhead below that dam. Just watch out for PBC oil slicks

I think you just troll your butt off in that magic 15-20 foot depth along the shorelines. There is an island in the middle, so if you could number the shorlines 1,2,3 and 4 (heading north)from Oregon I have heard good things about 2 and 4 right around the power lines that go across the river.

I've seen guys back trolling on the Oregon side right below the deadline, while I was Walleye fishing....... . I think they were Steelhead fishing but I'm not sure why you wouldn't nail the springers in there.

I've said all I can say without ending up in a shallow grave in Biggs.

There is a spot below the deadline/indian dipnet area(Oregon side) that has a noticeable riffle, if you will.
The fish will hang in this area.
Backtrolling or backbouncing works .
Drive into the John Day Rec area and check it out from the shore.

ID painter: Watch the counts over the Dalles and John Day. Watch this board. Watch river levels/conditions. Like the little grasshopper......you will know when it is time to make the long trek.
Good luck.

The information you all have is awsome. Thanks.
I have the limited info from brother and friends . I know there is always much more going on than they know about . Other tips will never hurt . You know,,"the more you know the better off you are" Thanks for the tips and keep
it comming.
When do you start to get serious about the springers there? id. painter
