Default Multnomah County Tax Evaders......

Does anyone else see the irony in this? Are people that pay the tax footing the bill to catch all that refuse to pay?
**************************************
From KATU
Multnomah County says it will hunt down tax evaders

February 5, 2004

- Checks are already rolling in for a controversial new income tax in Multnomah County, but while some are paying, others refuse.
In fact, Multnomah County expects more than 40,000 taxpayers to cheat on their taxes.

The county co-sponsored the first of three free tax help sessions at the Lloyd Center Thursday.

Most residents are paying the new tax, however the county is gearing up to go after the thousands who don't.

"This is a real tax we're not asking for charity here," said Bob Gravely from Multnomah County. "This is something the voters created and as an administrator of the tax we have to enforce it, it's the law."

Expect the county to take action if you don't pay your taxes.

Multnomah County can file a lien on your property, or garnishee your wages.

The county is looking at hiring as many as 20 people just to pursue the tens of thousands of people who don't pay up.

The 2003 tax payment to the county is due by April 15, 2004.

How much does it cost to hire 20 people? What benefits? I need a job.

Unreal. Probably close to $1M in expenditures.

I have my booklet right here in front of me. I am working on my county stuff tonight. Can't wait to see how much this is. My check memo will be "At Least I Voted No On 30", or "I Voted No On This One Too".

20 people to do what? Chase down 40,000 people and bonk 'em on the head until they cough up the cash? How 'bout hiring some of the thugs that Mult. Co. will eventually, again, release in a pitiful display of protest against the people of Oregon for voting down measure 30?

Isn't it amazing that no more posts were commented on this thread? I thought the pro-tax regeime would have jumped up to defend this headline. Don't recall any recent EMP that wiped out all hand held calculators.

Where are the blame-throwers?

Whats the use no matter who you vote for it all stays the same. Some day we will realize that the only way to change things is to unite and take them on head on. I have seen so many posts about the taxes but how can you change it.If officals were give a base salary and a portion of what they saved in a fiscal year maybe things would change.

Try double...20 people on staff in a corporation will run you 2.5M...includes overhead, benefits, and so on. That's without a PERS plan. As for the state, it will be more per person.

I hope they contract it and not hire....

On another thread there is a whine about the State not going after unpaid debt.

On this thread is a whine about Mult. Co. going after unpaid debt.

Classic example of how "they" just can't win in some people's eyes.

SD - it's about creating and funding yet another bureaucratic entity. The state already has mechanisms in place for collecting their debt. (Dept. of Revenue). Mult. Co. is looknig to expand theirs - cutting into the "new" funds. Also, it's the absurdity of 20 people trying to chase down the 40,000 civil disobedients - and the costs associated with it.

SD, what ORS said, and the irony that a county with a majority vote for the tax, and the majority isn't paying it.

Should OR go after unpaid debt? yes, Should we hire more government to get it, No. We already have mechanism to get people to pay their taxes. It isn't a new concept.

"40,000" civil disobedients". Seems that might require some growth in enforcment.

As I said, to some, "they" just can't win......

My preferences is not what this is about. This is about the double standards of those complaining about accountablity in Government.

It is also about illustrating that to some it will never be right, fair or equitable in their eyes.

I don't think this post was about a "fine whine".

This post was about irony.

If Multnomah County is going to be so deceiving, then it's time to take the business out of Multnomah County. "Cabela's and Bass Pro, so nice to see you again old friends!"

Obviously, the county commissioners never heard the old proverb of "Never bite the hand that feeds you".

Once the cancer has started.................

This fallout is a definite example on a vote "yes" for new taxes in Oregon and "Didn't read the fine print of the convoluted measure".

Figures........I'm getting a federal refund for the first time in 8 years and the county is going to get nearly half of it. :depressed:

Oh, well. My kids are disabled, and they receive services from the county (and state) so I guess I'd better pay up.
