Default Walling pond suprise!!

My son and I had a free day and decided to hit the local trout. We started at St.Louis ponds and met my uncle, he said it was dead so we moved on to walling pond knowing it was just stocked. Fishing was slow the water very muddy but it was a nice day to be out. I had just made the statement that we would be lucky if we got anything and by bobber starts to do the planter dance. I set the hook and fish on, then I say this feels like a nice fish. I'm not too excited I'm thinking 12" planter and I am using a 4' ultralight rod so they all feel big. Then the fish thrashes the surface and we see it's over 20"!! Now I'm excited, I want this fish bad and he wants off bad. I have an ultralight rod 4lb. line 2lb. leader and a size10 hook. After a nice battle and some long runs my son has it by the tail and we give it a wood shampoo. It turns out to be a 25" steelhead around 6 lbs. Nice surprise . It must be a recycle it had a fin clip and was still in good shape, not chrome but the meat was orange and it is going in the smoker tomorrow. We also hit Walter Worth and only got a few bites. That was the only fish we got but I was happy. Sorry I didn't take the camera but I was expecting 8" planters.

I've thought about hitting Walling and Wirth with a fly rod and float tube (I'm new to fly fishing). Is it usually pretty crowded at those ponds, or can a guy get a rod in edgewise?

Hawk, the bank can get crowded at Walling and always is at Wirth. You can't use a floating device on walling but a tube pontoon or small boat will work great on Wirth, no motors except electric.

Nice fish, my buddy caught a real nasty steelhead that they put in there, it was falling apart and spilling eggs when he took it out of the water
