debt, had the largest middle class in the world and Mom stayed
home to raise the kids.

What the hell happened?

Of course, telephones, automobiles and the road system didn't exist, either. That covers a bunch of those.

I work with 2 people who do not pay taxes. They say that by law you are not required to pay. They argue that same point. They say 100 years ago that income tax did not exist and that tarrifs and corporate tax was all that was needed. I tell them that 100 years ago our military consisted of muskets and cannons. Our roads were not interstates and public education was a lot different. We now have high priced police and fire departments. We now have welfare.

They say everything should be privatized. I asked him when he was going to put his kids into private school and he said he wasn't.

We pay too much in taxes but we do need to pay them.

No they wont....Thats what they tell me. They say no one has ever been arrested or fined or punished in any way for not filing taxes. They say that if you file a false tax return then that is where you get in trouble.

My dad worked for the IRS for 3 years (quit a few months ago). He said that the computer system that the IRS is getting together is some serious stuff. The days of getting lost in the paperwork are long gone. The only reason your co-workers aren't getting harrassed right now is because there is something like a 10 year statute of limitations. They are currently attending to other people, but before 10 years is up, your friends will get the visit. The other thing that the country didn't have 100 years ago was 'penalties and interest.' The IRS will come for their money and they will also get the 'penalties and interest' on top. Your friends better have a large savings account or plan on living in another county in 10 years, because the IRS WILL make you sell your car, they will make you sell your home, and they will make you sell any other assets you have in order to pay back the debt. If they are lucky and there is money left over, they will get to keep that.

Just thought you might ought to pass that along.

The anti-goverment people that like to spout the "you don't have to pay taxes" crap should be jailed for all the hardship they cause IMHO.

Have they ever heard of Willie Nelson?

If the rich and powerful, with expensive lawyers and accountants can't get away from taxes what makes them think that some lazy, irresponsible, po-dunk nobody like myself could get away from paying taxes, just because I get a little behind on the rent or because 'I don't want to, and they can't make me.'

He is not some middle class wage earner in their eyes. He only makes about 50 grand but he lost about 30 grand in the stock market. And the report your broker sends to the IRS is the amount of stock you SOLD! It is up to you to tell then what you lost. Is his case he bought and sold stock a lot. He actually sold $250,000 worth of stock over the course of the year. He bought $280,000. But the IRS doesn't know that. He got a letter from the state asking where the $250,000 is. He isn't worried.

Yea that can get tricky too.

A lot of day traders are having trouble with circumstances like that. You can deduct SOME losses, but not all. Might be worth the $300 or whatever to get some sound advice for H&R Block or some other tax preparer. Or at the very least make sure he can prove what he paid for those stocks so when they come a knockin he can show someone he didn't just spend it.

I just got scared when they started talking about people that take it seriously.

All I can say is even though I live in Vancouver, I'm glad M30 is going down, but that is a discussion for another topic...

Leys,

1) Your friend is smoking crack. Failure to file is a crime. See the IRS website. Please people, this scam has been around for years. See this link.

2) Your buddy should be able to get transaction history from his broker. Both of mine have excellent history pages on their site.

3) If he has losses, he can deduct them against other income to I believe $3000 a year. The excess carries foward. He should get Turbo Tax and use it to do the math. Lots of data entry, but it will take care of it.

People go to jail for this stuff. That's how they got Al Capone.

I know all too well the $3000 carry over rule. :depressed:
I have about 6 years left.

He says Al Capone filed a "false" tax return which is illegal but not filing at all is legal. He is pretty much a moron but what can you do?

The one I love the most however is if you get a tax return for overpaying in a year you have to add it to income for the following year and will be taxed for the return! Gotta love american taxes.

100 years ago, "old age" was about 42 also.

Let's shut down our governments and see what happens. Oh, wait until I get some serious weapons.
